Apple laptop dead screen revived, whoopee!
« on: July 21, 2010, 02:50:31 PM »
Hi there
About 3 months ago I posted about my G4 with a screen that kept going blank when it got opened beyond 90 degrees. I found out it is a common problem caused by a dodgy hinge mechanism and poor quality cable! I didn't want to just write off the machine, and with help and encouragement from your good selves, decided to strip it down and fix it myself. It took two months to get up courage/time to reduce the G4 to a pile of wires, bits and boards, but with the help of a step by step walk through on IFixIt.com (brilliant), and two used (but tested) cables from Laptops-to-go-ltd, I am up and running, bright and crisp and even. One up for the fixer-uppers!!
Two tips that were really useful.
1. some double sided sticky tape for keeping all the screws and bits in order when you remove them.
2. use strips of 'blister pack' weight plastic to slip between the halves of the casing as you go round and find the plastic rachet nibs that hold the case together. The seperation of the casing was the worst bit of the whole proceeding!
Anyway, thanks for the encouragement, just thought I would let you know how it all turned out.\

thumbup.gif thumbup.gif  Congratulations to you!!!
So glad you were able to repair it yourself and don't that feel good!?!?!

On this side of the pond we recommend grocery store 1-dozen egg cartons to keep the small bits and screws segregated and safe. Not sure if they are sold the same way over there, but you apparently found a good substitute.

Again, congratulations, and thank you for following up to let us know how the "project" completed.

thanx.gif for keeping us posted, the tips you learned and the successful job! I like to di similar projects as I figure if it's already broke, how much worse can it get?! Well, one time I did start a small fire...but it was quickly extinguished by the local fire patrol... blush-anim-cl.gif laughhard.gif

As for keeping small screws and nuts together, I prefer a large box of chocolates. Of course, one has to eat all the chocolates before using the box and the little compartments. yum.gif Sometimes, I share them with Judy (SWMBO!).
