G3 slow start up
« on: June 16, 2003, 03:51:34 PM »
It takes two minutes from pressing start button to get to desktop.
Is there  an obvious reason for this?
George.

george,

I take it your in OS9x.

Does the screen stay black for a long time when you start-up?

You may need a PRAM Zap from a cold boot.

Make sure the Disk is selected in Startup Control Panel or Preference Panel. smile.gif

Depending on the OS.

tacit is probably going to mention the Memory Check. smile.gif

Well, so you don't have to wait for tacit... wink.gif

If you have a lot of RAM and you are using other than X, hold down the Command + Option keys and then select the Memory Control Panel. At the bottom is a radio button to turn on/off the memory test. If it is on, turn off. If it is off, well, then we look elsewhere...

A PRAM zap can reset the memory test to ON, BTW as that is the default.

Do you have the machine setup to immediately go online? If so THIS info doc talks about having a DNS server address indicated in Network prefs.

Is this slower than before you upgraded to 10.2.6?

had a look at my original post and and saw that I said my machine was a G3 and in my last one G4.....................G4 it is.
Am not quite myself today, Christmas has come early in that I had a brainstorm and bought myself a 17inch studio display.

Congratulations on the new display George. smile.gif

Well the title said G3. So I thought it was a Beige.

And I would have said how to turn Memory check off.

But I think tacit said that doesn't always work on a Beige

and I was waiting for him to explain it. smile.gif

Ok George. smile.gif

Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utilty and launch it.

I put Disk Utility in the Dock myself.

Select your Hard Drive on the left.

Select First Aid Tab and Click Repair Permissions.

Picture here.

Mac OS X, Disk Utility

You can do other things while this goes on in the background.

Might take 5 minutes or so. smile.gif
