You neglected to say what version of MAIL you are using, but the following is correct — at least for v. 4.3

To get rid of RSS - go to Preferences > RSS > select a different RSS reader such as GRUML or NetNewsWire or Vienna.

To change the icon size:
In Mail GO To "VIEW" from the menu bar. At the bottom — de-select "Small Mailbox Icons"
The View menu is very handy — spend some time familiarizing yourself with it.

I suggest reading the following — it is from the built-in "on-line" HELP menu at the top of your display when MAIL is the frontmost application.
I like the nifty icon for making your mailboxes visible or hidden from view. You can have an icon in the menu bar that toggles this.
The toolbar at the top of Mail windows provides quick access to frequently used commands. You can choose which items appear in these toolbars and how the items are arranged.
To customize the toolbar:
Open the Mail window whose toolbar you want to change.
Make the window (Message Viewer, New Message, or Note) whose toolbar you want to change the current window.
Choose View > Customize Toolbar, or Control-click the toolbar and choose Customize Toolbar from the shortcut menu.
Drag items from the toolbar palette into the toolbar, drag items out of the toolbar, or move items around in the toolbar.
When you drag an item to the toolbar, a green icon indicates you’re adding it.
When you drag an item from the toolbar, visual and sound effects indicate it has been removed. You can add the item again if you want.
To change how the icons are displayed in the toolbar, choose an option from the Show pop-up menu.
While working in a Mail window, you can quickly:
Rearrange a toolbar by holding down the Command key and dragging a toolbar item to a new location, or dragging it out of the toolbar to remove it.
Cycle through the different icon and label sizes by holding down the Command key and clicking the toolbar button in the upper-right corner of the window until you see the setting you like.
When you resize a window, toolbar icons can become hidden as the toolbar narrows. To set which items disappear last, Control-click the icons in the toolbar and choose Keep Item Visible.
