iMac Intel i3 HD bootable copy
« on: October 30, 2010, 10:12:29 PM »
iMac Intel i3 21.5" OS 10.6.4

I am trying to make a bootable copy of my Internal Hard Disk to an External USB Hard Disk
using the latest version of Super Duper, 2.6.2. The resultant copy is not bootable.
Is it because the copying has to be done via a Firewire connection like it was on the G5’s?

I thought recording a bootable copy could be done with a USB connection on Intel Macs.

Or is there a special procedure one has to follow to make a bootable copy?

USB should work fine. Did you reformat the external drive to GUID before you tried to make the clone? (the formatting for an Intel Mac is different than that for a PPC, which uses Apple Partition Map) That's the most likely cause I can think of at the moment...

Thanks Paddy. But I do not have the GUID format as a selection. See attach 1.

Would the cause be that I am trying to make a bootable copy on one of a four partitioned 1 TB disk?
The partition in question is called “P4-125”. See attach 2.

JB, GUID is the partitioning scheme. You may need to repartition that drive. See: http://www.shirt-pocket.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5738 I cannot tell which partitioning scheme you've got from that screen shot - you need to select the PHYSICAL drive in Disk Utility, not the partition and then look to see what it says at the bottom of the screen (same place as your 2nd screen shot).

And, judging by that screen shot, your partition is waaaay too small. You have a mere 1.37 GB left - which is NOT enough for the OS to operate. (I've seen anywhere from 5 to 10GB quoted - percentages are not accurate now with the large drives of today) You're lucky it starts up at all, assuming it does. Also, if this is a backup, it's almost inevitable that your primary drives' files will grow, so your clone will as well. How big is your primary drive in your iMac? Me? I never bother partitioning anything any more. My primary drive is 1TB and my backups are 1TB and 750GB drives. So far I've got about 570GB on my primary drive.

At any rate, in order to clone to another partition or drive, you need a bit more space. See: http://www.shirt-pocket.com/forums/showthr...inear#post26942

Thanks Paddy. Your first link did it. I now have a bootable copy.
The reason for the small partition was for a temporary purpose.
My actual System Backup copy will reside in a 500 GB volume which will be a clone of my 500 GB Internal Disk.
Good thing you told me about the GUID partitioning scheme, or I would not have been able to make a bootable copy of my Internal Disk.

Thanks again Paddy.
