Will OS 9 run on an Intel partion?
« on: January 11, 2011, 07:14:25 PM »
My nephew just bought a new Macbook which he recently updated to system 10.6.6.  He has been a casual Mac user since he was little due to my influence on my brother, which is his dad.  Started out on a Performa which he still has and occasionally starts up for giggles.

He asked me if it was possible to run system 9.1 on a separate partition.  Is that possible on an Intel Mac?

This is very interesting, I will certainly take a look at it, as Ive got some software that needs OS 9.
Thank you for that link!

I'd like to find a way of dual-booting my G5 machines with OS 9.2 on the other partition.  I've poked around on this a little and have found no way yet; is there something about newer firmware or something that would keep OS 9.2 from running?

Im not going to try it until somebody here does and gets it to work.
Though I would love to have 9 for my old software stuff.

As far as I know, it's the boot ROM, John.

Strangely, I have no desire to run OS 9 ...absolutely none whatsoever - can't even manage to summon the slightest bit of nostalgia for OS 6 (my first Mac's OS). I guess I'm just not sentimental about operating systems. tongue.gif wink.gif The Classic OS just seems clunky to me now. I know, I'm about to be excommunicated from the Church of Apple for heresy....I'll shut up now. toothgrin.gif

Anyway, for those who do want it, Sheepshaver seems to be the only solution and here's a direct link to the software site with instructions and tips. I'm not sure what the differences are between it and the Low End Mac page, but you should probably look at both if you want to try it.

(And yes, it does work in Snow Leopard, Tom, but you can only use OS 7.5 through 9.04 - not 9.1 or 9.2)

It's not firmware. It's everything. The last time OS 9 was updated, the G5 processor didn't exist, PC3200 RAM didn't exist, SATA hard drives didn't exist...how would it be possible for an operating system to be able to run on hardware that never even existed when it was written? It'd be a bit like expecting the TRSDOS operating system that was written for ancient TRS-80 computers to boot a Mac.

SheepShaver is an emulator; it will run OS 9 in emulation on an Intel Mac (or a Windows machine), but I don't know if it will run on a G5.

According to MacUpdate and various threads in forums re: running it on PPCs, it does run an on a G5.

I'm expecting you to be correct about this Tacit; but I do have a set of CD's or DVD's that came out of a cleaning of our software vault and must've come with a computer and they say on them that they're for an G5 iMAC and one has 10.3 installation and the other has OS 9 on the label.  They won't work on the iMAC G5 with the iSight that I bought from the school district so I suspect that they're for the earlier G5 iMAC without the iSight although I'm not at all sure I ever saw one in the school district (maybe in our Title I reading program that supports the Catholic schools).  I think I'll try setting up the G4 Powermac that I know will run the OS 9 disks with a new hard drive that never had OS 10 anything on it!

gnug:   FWIW.   I had one of the first build G5 iMacs (no iSight) and it would run OS 9  up to 9.1.  It would NOT  run 9.2.

John, the disks you have for an iMac won't work on a G4 any better than they worked on the incorrect iMac. Those are the system disks that came with a Mac and are specific to that particular Mac model - but I'm pretty sure you know that already! wink.gif

Daryl, I'm not sure what was up with your G5 iMac, but considering it came out in 2004, and OS 9.2 came out in 2001, it would no doubt run 9.2.2 - in fact, I'd be willing to bet that's what's on its install disk. Also, it would only run it in Classic mode - not natively. Those iMacs shipped with 10.3.5.

gnug:   I think I just stepped in it.  I now recall that issue was with the computer I had before the iMac G5.  It was a souped up 9400 with a Sonnet G3 card.  Sorry bout that.
