G5 Specs and Prices
« on: June 20, 2003, 05:22:26 AM »
Apple inadvertently posted the new G5 specs last night. Later, the posting was pulled, but not before MacMinute got this screen shot.

The new Power Mac is expected to be officially announced Monday at Steve Jobs' keynote from Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. Or so the story goes...

I read it this morning at macrumors, but since Apple legal asked them to remove the information I didn't dare to post it here.

Although I think it's sort of a pitty that the information was leaked (poor Steve Jobs' speech wink.gif), at least I now know definitely that I am going to order a new PowerMac next week.

When I first posted, I had not been aware that Apple asked that site/link be pulled or I would not have posted it. doh.gif In any event, the site I cited is now defunct.

Sorry Steve!

You can see images all over the dealmac Forum. smile.gif

Seems pretty suspicious to me.

Guess we'll know more Monday, one way or the other. smile.gif

There's images and specs HERE, but also some interesting commentary
as to those specs. It's worth the read.

The fact that Apple legal is on the move seems to support the theory that these specs are real.

One user in the forum kps linked to stated a very good point (at least in my eyes):
"What has Apple been working on for the last 2 years while the G4 stagnated in speed and irrelevant spec tweaking?"

I think these specs could very well be real. 8 GB RAM seems to be an incredibly high number, but Apple has been a pioneer in lots of things in the computer industries.
And the fact that there are no PCI-X cards available at the moment doesn't mean that Apple wouldn't put it in their PowerMacs. Remember USB? It was not before the release of iMac that it became hugely successful (when the iMac was released there was hardly any USB hardware available).

Looking forward to Monday! smile.gif

Two more days and we knooooow biggrin.gif

Just reading on that Dutch bbs that Apple probably will integrate hypertransport in the new G5's... but this is just a rumour so far.
I have no idea what this Hypertransport does, but as for other tech gurus on TS, i thought it would be interesting to mention wink.gif

I may be wrong but I think someone hacked intoi Apples's site and pulled a fast one on all of us. Even if it is correct and that Jobs was going to announce the new machines on Monday, he probably will delay the announcement out of spite!!! mad.gif  This has been his behavior (5 year old level) before when someone jumped the gun. We are talking about an egomaniac here so don't hold your breath waiting for the G5 or G4.5 announcement.

I doubt that.
The flat-panel iMac was leaked a day before release and Apple did not stop the release (or the announcement).

And I doubt that someone was able to hack into Apple's online store. If this sort attempt was made it could seriously cripple the online store's sales. Besides, the Apple Store is not on Apple's servers, but on a different service (it used to be akasomething. can't remember the exact name of that company).
And while it might not be impossible to hack their servers, a company that is specialized on customers with high sale numbers and hits knows how to protect itself from hackers.

Seems I missed all the excitement or rumors.

Just by running through a few sites, boards for a quick look.
I'd say my first thoughts are: Kind of doubt Apples site was hacked also. After all the Apple house wasn't built of glass. The foundation might of been a little shaky at first but not now. Bet they even have locks on their bathrooms now days.
Which brings the idea of - OK! Which one of my family let it be known that the spare key was under the floor mat!?! - theory. Has gotten the Mac computer world hoping just before ... hasn't it.

Yet the specs I caught?
Fifteen pound heat sink on top!?!
8 gigs of ram? Lets dwell on that for a minute.
Because ram has been cheap for some time now, most folks have plenty of physical ram in their machines to accomplish whatever task without getting the dialog window popping up "not enough memory" or whatever it says in OS 7 through 9xx.
In OS X up to 10.2.6. ram is allocated.
Granted I don't have any really heavy programs/applications.Although I can fire up every single one possible and I doubt if the machine would cough loudly.
I'm at a loss at the 'why' so much [could be available] if needed.?.
If this does turn out to be a true fact .... the 'why' is still there.
Smells a lot like Sea Worlds food bin though.

Missed all the pics! Anyone grab one by chance?

IAWB. biggrin.gif

8 gigs of Ram of Ram seems.....high.

So does the 1ghz bus. I don't know about that 50 lb heatsink...I mean 8 lb, but....I'm
gonna wait till Monday.  taped.gif

Just in: The long awaited PowerPC 970 systems. These systems are not dual processor...but QUAD processor. In addition they will interface telepathically with users allowing them to enter a virtual reality world Apple is calling "Quartz Quantum Extreme 64bit."

I think it's a rumor

Not much of a pic Bill. smile.gif

They're still showing it here.

http://www.macobserver.com/article/2003/06/20.6.shtml

I'm sure tacit could explain the "scientific" reason why 8 Gigs of RAM is a logical next step.

That is, why the Memory controller would support that or something.

I think that part is reasonable even if it isn't going to happen Monday. smile.gif
