A heatsink is a large piece of metal, often with ridges or "blades" that allow for dissipation of heat. Think of the old fashioned radiators with the many tubular ridges that allowed the air to circulate and carry heat away.

Some processors have huge heatsinks attached and are more heatsink than processor.   wink.gif

Yeah. Not much of a pic. Were all the pics the mirror design?
Guess there is some reason for that massive ram bit (that is if its not some hoax) but its beyond me why.

Krissel, your links just about says what I've found.
Have to wait and see/hear next week.

On the one hand I suspect an Apple marketing ploy, on the other, a move by the competition to raise expectations, only to generate disappointment come Monday.

Choose your weapon....... wink.gif

In any case, more attention will be focused on Steve.

8 gigs of ram? Lets dwell on that for a minute.
Because ram has been cheap for some time now, most folks have plenty of physical ram in their machines to accomplish whatever task without getting the dialog window popping up "not enough memory" or whatever it says in OS 7 through 9xx.
In OS X up to 10.2.6. ram is allocated.

This off course is entirely correct, but just think about the 1Gb of Quark 6 needed (recommended) to work dry.gif
I haven't seen any specs myself from it, but was that not what they said?

I am not an expert but if the 8 GB RAM capacity holds then I suspect it has to do  with 8 = 2^3. I can see possibly three banks each with 2 slots to hold up to two 1 GB SDRAM.

I agree that some of the software is getting HUGE and I can forsee 1 to 2 GB programs which are fastest and most efficient being held all in RAM. The other side of the coin is that virtual memory involves flipping one or two pages (usually 512 bytes of data and instructions) in and out of RAM memory.

Its been a long (30 years) time since I worked on virtual memory design and memory hierarchys so who knows.

By the way, from the previous posts, I stand corrected in my assumption that Apple was hacked into to produce an erroneous web page. Well, Monday will tell the tale. If it is all true, I know that I will immediately order the biggest and  baddest cruncher Apple offers. (Kris please forgive my garmmatical errors).

Word is floating around that the expected shipping date is mid to late September for the first patch of G5s. Ebay is starting to overflow with folks selling off their G3s and G4s.

And Stevie hasn't even spoke up yet!   doh.gif  jawdrop.gif  doh.gif

"How Real Was Last Night's Incident?"

QUOTE
Very. And here's our evidence:

The leaked specs: They wound up on Apple's site. Apple is hosted by Akamai, one of the most secure and professional hosts in the world. If Apple was actually hacked, more damage would have been done.

The Apple cybercops: Rumor sites left and right are demanding that they have their info about the G5s pulled immediately. They've already hit dozens of sites.

The discussions at Apple: All topics relating to the G5 and last night's leak on Apple's discussion forums have been removed.

1-800-MY-APPLE: I couldn't get through last night, but I did this morning, and they are denying everything to the point of "There is no such thing, sir." However, other people have called and reported that their representative did confirm the leak last night and that the G5s do exist and will be available June 23. -oops-

My guess is this was a calculated leak, performed in order to raise the attention of consumers, as well as raise their stock value. We'll ALL be tuning in on Monday to see what Steve brings us. I'll be straightjacketed until then.

I sure am hoping this is true. I've been waiting over 5 years for somethign to replace my highly upgraded beige G3. The dual 2GHz system will be the perfect replacement.

The things I really wonder (besides the truth about the leak) is if ATI or nVidia will have 8x AGP cards ready by the time these ship, what the prices will be, and how soon they will be shipping.

I need some more hours at work to pay for this new thing wink.gif

I've been waiting so long for the G5 myself.

The only thing that I am really frightened of is the price! biggrin.gif

No. The current G4s are definitely going to be discontinued.

However, it might very well be possible that Apple releases (someday) something like iMacs without an attached screen (low-end tower). A lot of Mac users have asked for this kind of computer since not all want a flat-panel display (iMac) or a 17" CRT display (eMac).

That would be great.... IF they make that tower in that way that you can finally upgrade parts inside from the "iMac" to, i think that's a really big downside of the iMac/eMac sad.gif
Hmmm, you think they might do this cause of the "pizza" box? dry.gif
