G5 Specs and Prices
« Reply #30 on: June 22, 2003, 09:56:42 PM »
My bet would be that the prices will be very similar to the last round of G4 upgrades (can't remember what those were exactly...something like $3,600 for the top end?) before the price cuts. Maybe very slightly higher - but not much. That's been the order of the day for some time now - don't think it would change a whole lot, or they'll price themselves out of the market. How's this for comparison...a PowerComputing Power Tower Pro with dual 200 MHz processors, 32MB of RAM, a 2 GB HD....$6,500 in 1997! Or even pricier - the 350 MHz PowerMac 9650 at $6,800-$7,500, depending on the configuration. Right up there with the 20th anniversary Macs at $7,500. The first generation PowerBook G3 had a list price of $5,700.

Heck...they might even be cheaper than the last bunch of G4's...(we can hope and dream can't we? wink.gif )

The CUBE ?

 biggrin.gif

 Actually, yes. smile.gif

But the Cube was released when the iMac still had G3 processors and were much less expensive.

The Cube probably failed because it was neither a pro tower nor an consumer product such as iMac.

However, nowadays we have G4 iMacs and eMac. The G4 has arrived at the consumer platform. Hence, a G4 Cube (low-end tower) would make sense. At least more sense than before.

As for the price I am with Paddy. I don't think Apple can afford to make the new PMs much more expensive than the last G4 models.

I think the cube failed because it wasn't very upgradeable.

Maybe a Bigger cube. Of course i'm a square.

Proce wise, I'm hoping and guessing it stays the same. Many times, Apple has even lowered the prices across the board (in the range of model) by $100 or so. That would be excellent.

But as for high priced Macs, try the ole Mac IIx and Mac IIfx. They cost $9,300 and $10,000 respectivly when they came out. OUCH!

Guess I didn't go back far enough on EveryMac.com, Mike! wink.gif Ouch indeed - when $10K was worth a lot more too (buying power of about $14K in today's money).

Think of it...spending as much on your computer as you would on a NEW Toyota Corolla! wacko.gif

40MHz processor, 4MB-128MB of RAM, 40-160MB HD (whoohoo!) for $14K in 2003 dollars, vs:

2 GHz processor, 8 GB of DDR RAM, (HD unknown - but let's pick 120GB for fun), for say, $3,500 in 2003 dollars.

50 times the processor, 64 times the memory, 768 times the storage (!) for 1/4 of the price. Not bad. biggrin.gif

*note - calculations re: MB/GB use 1024MB=1GB  wink.gif

tacit said he really wanted that "wicked fast" IIfx. smile.gif

The Cube was way over priced for what it was.

They still cost a lot used for what they are. smile.gif

I priced out my new computer through the Apple Store for Education, and it will cost me $2,916. I'll be able to afford that by the time they start shipping.

BTW, my specs are:

Dual 2Ghz, 512 MB RAM, 160 GB hard drive, Combo drive, ATI Radeon 9800, plus all the other included stuff. No longer will I have dropped frames in Warcraft 3 wink.gif

Are you kidding Kelly! smile.gif

This system is what I have been dreaming of. I did downgrade the optical drive, I don't need to burn DVDs. And I took out the modem, I did that on my parents G4 450. However, I went top of the line on the video card, cause I love those games!  biggrin.gif

I understand GM. smile.gif

People should be aware though that Games are about the only reason for the Top End Card.

I appreciate Steve Jobs and his associates honesty -right up front- about 3gigs being developed/in the works within 12 months.

In an odd way that's helping me decide on making a hugh financial decision within the next few months.
My twin 933s are purring right now. Fact one of the reason why I picked up the second 933 was in case the other went down for -outside- repairs,I could still function. The second had very little hours logged on it when I picked it up. Bet I've put more hours on it than the previous owner did.

Gamer I'm not.
Speed is more than enough for my needs.
Horsepower/disk place I already have plenty.
Third party hardware: Well my firewire #400 works just fine and my oldie usb zip etc.

Weighing pros and cons on getting what was just announced yesterday ... cons out weigh by far the pros.
I'd have to sell one of the 933s. Which would most likely be a loss considering all the time I've put in it too make it purr.

Jury is still out on what in blazes I'm going to do naturally.

1) Around December I figure the second batch of yesterdays G5s will pop out with -this has been fixed and that-.
2) After looking at the pics more and more I don't think even a bag will hide the fact they are butt ugly. <gr>
3) Of course when the 3gigs come out,the others will drop in price a bunch.

Am I talking myself out of it ...... jury went to lunch. smile.gif

Bill, you really thing they are butt ugly?

I'm going to reserve judgement until I see one in person.  I like the idea of metal vs. plastic, so I am leaning towards liking the new design.

And, of course, when the day finally comes when two G5 processors just don't cut it, the case will make one heck of a fine cheese grater.  We have needed something new to transform our obsolete Macs into; the Mac In-A-Box fishtanks are looking a tad dated...

Man, I can't wait to tackle one of those mega-blocks of cheese available at Costco!
