There's a little app at Google that lets you discover DNS servers that may be faster than the ones you now use. I'm sure it's just a coincidence that it is provided by Google and that Google seems to pop up as the fastest server... Thinking.gif

Whenever I've tried running Namebench, it always comes back with Rogers' own DNS being the fastest. Which, is good in that I'm a Rogers' customer, but the one thing that really bugs me is that if you mis-type a URL, you get an annoying list of ROGER'S suggestions. (paid links, in other words) For a while I was annoyed enough to use OpenDNS, but it seems silly to slow everything down just because I'm not happy with the occasional URL typing mistake! However, I just discovered (in deliberately putting in gobbledygook) that you can disable that Rogers' "assisted search" and have now done so. Obviously, they actually listened to the kvetching of their users finally! smile.gif

TYPE in a url?! Type in a URL?! We doan need no typin urls!!! laughhard.gif

Why would anyone do that?! dntknw.gif rofl.gif I'm sure I've done that several times, just this year, but I'd be hard pressed to actually remember one of them. I just don't 'surf' like that...if it's not already a  link I will probably never visit a site. Finding a site that might have info I need is what search engines are for. They even give you a clickable link! WOW.gif And it's a good thing, too! I'm not only the whorld's wurst spelorz, too many sites try to be 'smart' by coming up with completely weird 'spelinz' of their name. wallbash.gif I'm sure there is a reason for making things difficult for typists, I just don't know what it is... dntknw.gif

Fortunately, most of those 'hijackers' provide a way to 'opt-out' and even links can be incorrect and/or dead. But I never try to respell a url, I either modify the search or figure the site doesn't really want my visit. wink.gif

Only a 10% difference between my DNS and Google.  I'm just wondering if this is a tool for them to get information about our browser history since they use the cache for sites to query the servers.  Thinking.gif

WHAT?! You think Google might be tracking our movements/surfing/habits?! Shame, shame! nono.gif Don't you know that all businesses are innocent until someone with deeper pockets can catch them in the act? What possible good would it do for Google to know/have/store/sell that kind of info on us?! It seems the "conspiracy" bug has invected another TS member! eek2.gif rolleyes.gif

I'm not sure there is any way to use the interwebs without creating value for someone other than myself. wallbash.gif It's only a simple coincidence that the word "web" is synonymous with trapping something... laughhard.gif

I'm showing my ignorance (and my laziness) , I'm sure, yes.gif but it would seem that the closer the DNS server is to my computer, the faster the translation would be. And aren't we talking microseconds, anyway? And the conversion is just the first step in accessing the desired site, right? Or, does the DNS server also establish the path to the actual site and the return path to my computer? Somehow, I doubt that...

I suspect that the speed to any site is different every time the browser is started. Even if the actual site address is maintained in a cache, the actual path is likely different with each new request. So, with the info supplied by e DNS already known, the time saving is even less after the actual address is stored the first time. dntknw.gif
