Temp outside is presently 6º and some local roads still a bit icy.
Is that supposed to be Centigrade?! Down here, our water freezes well before 6°!!! At that temp, we could drive on any pond/lake around! eek2.gif

No, it's Fahrenheit. It went below 0 one night last week but we've been averaging the teens and 20's for the most part in the day.  A couple days we were in the low 30's and it seemed like Spring. rolleyes.gif

By the roads "being icy" I meant that the salts and sanding hadn't eliminated the slippery driving.  smile.gif

Here's a shot from a recent storm after I got the snowblower working. You can see the flat roof section that I needed to shovel the other day before the ice storm hit. It's about 15x20' with only about a 6" grade and there is another smaller flat section on the other side of the house. The day I shoveled there was a bit more snow on it than you see in this pic.  We've had 8 measurable storms so far this winter.

These are growing each day.

We're due for a little blip Saturday of sleet, rain (?) and snow but it's not supposed to add up to much. Next week they are talking about another "significant" storm.  rolleyes.gif

More rain due here too, and might even get up into southern NH and Maine.
What a mess, it all melts, the catch basins cant keep up, and then it freezes again.  Its a real problem with freezing on houses or buildings with flat roofs.
We expect flooding here again, so we have to set up our big pump to keep it out of our cellar. I am sooooo sick of winter, but actually this is nothing compared with some places in USA.  So I shouldnt complain.

This is "not" a picture of my neighborhood (when people stand still to long), but rather Mt. Zao, Yamagata prefecture, in Japan:

Lots of other pictures:

Speaking of weird snow creations...

We finally had a "normal" snow yesterday. Several inches followed by blazingly clear skies the next day. Only problem is that it didn't get above freezing today. But with the air so dry, 95% of the snow is gone on the south side of anything and the streets are 99% clear of ice. Down 9 to 11 degrees tonight but the dry air will probably clear away 50% of the remaining snow through sublimation. Supposed to hit 65°F Sunday! clap.gif

Anyway, took a letter to the mailbox early today and was surprised at the ice/snow formations on the driveway. Don't remember ever seeing anything like it.

The fish are hiding under a sheet of ice! wink.gif So far, it hasn't remained frozen more than a few days at a time. Otherwise, I have to place a pan of ht water on the ice to create a hole for some air-water contact. They usually stay in the deepest parts of the pond and almost hibernate. Their metabolism slows down so much that they don't/can't eat and don't need as much oxygen, either. I am amazed every Spring that most of the youngins make it through the Winter!

You can see the snapping turtles under the ice here, on winters when there isnt a snow cover on the pond.
Our kids would skate there, and bang their hockey sticks on the ice and the turtles would slowly start to move.
I think there are perch and bluegills there too, but you cant see them.
Someone put some big goldfish in there once, arent they a kind of carp?
You could see them under the ice, but they died out within a couple of years.

Tapping or breaking the ice would certainly cause any vertebrates (not sure about 'bugs') alive in the water to want to move...away! eek2.gif Sound travels much better in water than in air. Fish can hear. WOW.gif Causing them to move unnecessarily will just waste their stores of fat and may cause their early demise. They may not be big enough to eat (at least by humans!) but they are very colorful and by building the pond, I have a responsibility to provide what they need to survive. They 'pay me back' by being beautiful and relaxing. wink.gif That's why we use the 'pan-full-of-hot-water' method of making a hole in the ice. rather than the 'hit-it-with-a-hammer' technique. A couple of Winter's back, I used an old electric hairdryer/blower to keep a hole open, but wastes electricity and made noises even a human could hear! rofl.gif Of course, snakes and egrets in our area are not quite as 'soft-hearted' about these fish... laughhard.gif
