Quick time gone crazy
« on: February 17, 2011, 07:33:41 PM »
QuickTime has always played my videos just fine, but when I tried this afternoon, it just keeps quitting. I hit relaunch and it quits again and again, doesnt even start the movie, just plain quits with the dialog box.

I have tried installing several versions, and restarted repeatedly. Nothing works, Quicktime wont work on this Mac any more, it just rolled over and died.
I have to use VLC, which is OK. Though I have to drag the video to the dock, and cannot double click upon it.

Then I tried it again tonight, downloaded Quicktime and it looked like it installed, though it was NOT in my apps. So I clicked upon the movie, and GRAPHER opened and played the movie! Who is Grapher?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grapher

This is quite whacky. I can move my movies/videos onto my other Mac and they play fine with Quicktime.
Is there anything I can do to reinstall Quicktime, or should I just forget it and use VLC and Grapher.

Installed it fresh from Apple site, wont show up in my apps. Restarted many times.
I think its gone totally awry, I moved the other app over from the other Mac and it just kept quitting on launch.
I guess something is really screwed up with only it, as everything else works just fine here.
Off to bed, this is frustrating, but with VLC, I guess I can get along without QT.

Jane, did you clear your caches (using something like Onyx) and repair permissions? Try that. Then try deleting the com.apple.QuickTime.plist file in your user->Library->Preferences file.

Post the crash report from the crash logs too - sometimes you can see obvious problems.

Also, try a different user account to see if the problems persist.

BTW - which version of QT is this? Version number and whether free or Pro.

Tried everything, but found this,,,,, free version and the proper one for 10.5.8 from what I could glean from the download site. Deleted the QT.plist files too, there were 2.

Look at the bottom post, and I did it, I downloaded this Pacifist program, like they said, and followed his instructions, and QuickTime is back in my Apps and works just fine without a restart.
2 screenshots, I will save these, as I assume if QT quit like this that other people might see this problem too.

Unless you deleted everything associated with QuickTime first (including the receipts) your new Apple install most likely detected some already-installed components and determined that nothing needed to be done.

These prefs would also need be removed:
com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist
com.apple.quicktimeplayer.plist
QuickTime Preferences

Pacifist  allows an install to be performed even if there are existing copies of any of the components.

That is sure interesting, as I snagged and deleted all the plist and prefs, I thought.
But the receipts, wow, never would have thought of that, nor would I have thought of deleting the QT instruction pdf files.

Was lucky to find Pacifist, seems lots of people had this same problem and was easily found by Googling QT troubles.
Might think that Apple could fix this, as when you install Adobe stuff or other stuff, this never happens, or at least Ive never come across similar problems with any other software.

I am saving these instructions and also the convoluted Canon wireless scanning with PS problems, so that if other people come across this, I will have the answers.

Thank you, and I know I always can get the answers here as usual, and save the info.
