Sorry for the late reply.

Back @ the library again...

G5, running 10.5.4, IIRC.

Was powered off for a few weeks, when restarting, it hung, couldn't even get Activity monitor to come up, so I powered it down again and now it will not boot up, it hangs at grey screen.  I do not have a 10.5 CD to boot with and troubleshoot. I don't recall the kybd combo for Safe Mode.

While cleaning up my messy desk, I found the 10.2.7 CD it shipped w/ [presumably] but I doubt that will boot the machine w/  so much higher OS on the HD.  I also tried to zap PRAM, but I now know that I did not accurately remember the key combo.

My next ideas are to try again to zap PRAM w/ the right key combo [command-option-P-R] and see if I can start in Safe Mode [please remind me how], and if no joy, try to boot from 10.2.7 CD.  

If someone can mail me a 10.5.x CD, that will be great. Other suggestions welcomed.

thnask for tips KB cool.gif Note - Weird...I cannot get a return to stick between 'tips' and 'KB'...maybe something to do w/ IE on this library computer and the BB s'ware?  I've edited the post numerous times, and the returns           I put into the edit text are not displayed or retained

Kenny, your G5 will boot just fine with the install disk that it shipped with. If you choose to boot from the install disk, the computer doesn't "know" that it's an earlier OS than you have installed on your HD, it just knows that it's an OS that can be installed on that hardware.

I'd highly recommend that you boot from that install disk to make sure that the machine at least works, and that your HD is visible in Disk Utility. I don't think I'd try fixing it in DU for 10.2, but you might want to "verify" the HD just to see if there are any major problems. As Jim mentions, it could be a battery failure and it could also be a HD failure.

Do you have Disk Warrior?

Nope.

No Disk Warrior seedy.  Not old, not current, none.

PS Harv snailmailed me a 10.5 Install DVD [not a commercial disk, looks like a personal backup] .

NB.- this project has become a low priority due to other life issues, so I will be unlikely to have any news about my Mac for a couple o' weeks, minimum.

Thx all for help so far, will write again when there is something to report.
