Travails of upgrading
« on: August 02, 2011, 10:44:38 PM »
I now suspect that either I have two completely different iMacs both with bad FW ports or the problem is actually in the external enclosure. Since I am hoping that is a very slim possibility, I'll be looking for another enclosure to put the 2TB drive into. Of course, the other more probable cause is the HD itself! It's getting frustrating to see that it works on two other machines but only rarely on the old iMac. Yet it was not seen by the new one, either. More testing/moving/swapping is in order, I guess. In the meantime, I'm using the old iMac in Target Mode and transferring items manually.

ABD:   FWIW, after about a week of frustration  dealing with a dead FW port on my switcher friends iMac G5, I was able to resisitate it back to life by simply resetting the SMU. Do not have a clue as to why, and it was completely dead.

Well, I just spentwasted several minutes trying to use Migration Assistant via a network connection only to see the app(s) spinning gears...I finally realized that the Airport has three ethernet ports doh.gif so I could connect the old and new iMacs to the same network! :wall bash:

Unfortunately, the app kept saying the old iMac had dropped off the network (without much else happening). After several attempts I saw that Apple claimed that MA could use Firewire for the connection. No where in the MA setup screens is FW even mentioned; "networked"? Yep, "Time Machine"? Yep... The only "mention" is that MA can use another "dick." Of course, in Target Mode, that's all the other Mac looks like, so "another dick" can be another Mac running in Target Mode. :roll eyes:

And since that went so well and so fast, it is apparent that the old iMac's FW 800 port (at least) is fine!) clap.gif So, while making the transition from one machine to another, I'm learning all sorts of things, one of which is PATIENCE! laughhard.gif

All that's been done many times, including a trip to the Apple Store, whose "genius" claimed it was the ports on the old iMac. rolleyes.gif BTW, your first two links go to the same page...

OK, I have a huge "Import" group of mailboxes on the new iMac. Sucked the things off the old iMac. Fair enough, but there are now two folders inside each 'imported' mailbox; one contains the actual messages (even though they seem to also be in the particular 'imported' mailbox) and an "Attachments" folder, containing...'stuff!' smile.gif

Now, there seem to be two different ways to put these old messages into new locations with the same first step: Recreate a mailbox with the whatever name (although usually the same one as the 'imported' on). You can now drag the messages out of the old mailbox and into the newly created one...over and over and over as one goes through all the boxes. dntknw.gif

I soon tired of all this dragging and dropping and found one could simply drag the "Messages" folder into the list and then just rename it to whatever it should be. As a matter of fact, one could just drag the 'imported' mailbox, still with its sometimes two sub-folders to a new location.

The problem remaining, however, is where to put those 'Attachments' in Lion? I'd check a with a test but I seem to create a very time-consuming "Updating Cache Directory" and "[MobileMe] Communicating with server" activity. I may not have Mail setup correctly, yet...
wallbash.gif OK, found everything that's arrived today in my Junk folder...Spamsieve is still not running with its previous 'corpose,' just another item to find on the old machine.

Of course, dragging all the files out of Junk and into the Inbox is causing another humongous thrashing of adding/caching/checking/updating/etc. If/when it ever stops, I'm going to restart to see if Spamsieve will cooperate. Right now, I gotta leave for a few hours...later! wink.gif

It's amazing how dependent I've become on PathFinder, Typinator and 1Password! blush-anim-cl.gif PathFinder makes it so much easier to search Everywhere and display the 'hidden' files/directories just like they should be seen. Typinator makes inserting snippits of text or images with two or three key presses. And I keep all my license keys in 1Password. It is a lot easier dealing with this process now that they are all installed and usable!! clap.gif

Still have massive redundancy in Mail and thanks to .Mac, that has propagated to the old iMac and my iPhone! But I did this to myself! wallbash.gif

Address Book was fairly easy, I just made a backup/archive (it's in the File menu) of the one on the old machine, dragged it to the new one and double-clicked it. Address Book took over and asked if I really wanted to put real info in the practically empty app. doh.gif Norhing gets by this new machine! rolleyes.gif laughhard.gif

I'm getting there...the machine itself is fantastic! I just need to get the ridiculous duplicates out of Mail, et another Rain base for the thing so I don't have to move sideways to get in front of either side of the super-wide display and get a backup solution going.

Tried several AppleScripts and Tidy Up to find and process duplicate emails. None of the scripts even claimed to work in Snow Leopard, much less Lion and all of them quit with error messages. Tidy Up looks like a handy tool for this kind of thing but I could never set up the appropriate criteria...sent a message to the developers.

However, for some unknown reason, I now don't seem to have many (if any!) messages duplicated! dntknw.gif Thinking.gif

Also found that MaxMenus has been updated and now runs in 64-bits! clap.gif Added it and several other 'must-have' apps to the Software registrations section of 1Password.

Things seem to be running smoothly now, and most of my incorrect procedures have been corrected... blush-anim-cl.gif

I'm liking the Magic Pad more and more, still having to watch having more than one finger touching it at some times...lazy fingers? laughhard.gif

I really think that you should start a separate thread sharing about all the "add-ons" that you like, why you like them, what they do and where we can all find them. yes.gif

Most of them have been mentioned in the pinned "Recent Updates" thread. As for why I like them, that's pretty subjective. If everyone else would just use them, they would understand, anyway! rant.gif laughhard.gif

So...you want some one else to do all the work for you... laughhard.gif

I'll meet you half way. Here are some "add-ons" that I've installed in Lion:
    MaxMenus
    PathFinder
    1Password (which you already have)
    URLM Pro
Typinator (there are similar ones out there)
    Default FolderX
    Growl
