Can't open iPhoto 6
« on: August 11, 2011, 01:40:55 PM »
My wife loaded some photos from her camera yesterday. She rebuilt thumbnails cause it asked her.
Today when she wanted to load some photos from a CD - she gets this message:
"YOu can't open current photo library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."
And the LOADING ball keeps spinning.

She didn't change anything that she knows about. We do store the iPhoto Library on a Second Drive to save space.

What to do?

G4, OSX10.4.11, iPhoto 6.

How many copies of iPhoto does she have installed (I think even Spotlight can tell you that)? There may actually be more than one! eek2.gif

Is that "Second" drive shared with your computer?

The active(?) iPhoto Library folder (#4)  is on the secondary internal hard drive.
There is an iPhoto.app on the main hard drive.
The Users/Name/Pictures folder is empty.
There are 3 iPhoto Library folders (#1, 2, 3) on the secondary internal hard drive as back ups from every 6 months.
iPhoto Library (#4) seems to be the largest and active one.

Yet, when I open iPhoto before it freezes, I see the size of iPhoto is smaller than it should be. As if it was #2 or #3 instead of #4.

Which am I looking for - iPhoto.app or "iPhoto Library" folder?
Or what am I trying to connect to?

iPhoto.app is the application. The iPhoto library is wherever you put it or in its default location, which is User->Pictures->iPhoto Library. It would seem that you have moved yours to a secondary drive.

Does that secondary drive had another version of iPhoto, by any chance, that your wife may have used by mistake?

See this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/272424...=0&tstart=0 - suggestions in the last post may be helpful.

Do you have a backup of the main library? You should have...

Paddy,
Originally the G4 Main Drive was partitioned into a WORK and OS Partition. The OS Partition became too small to hold all the photos. So, iPhoto Library #4 is on the WORK partition. And a back up from a few days ago is on the internal drive because it's much larger. Is that what you mean by "Do you have a backup of the main library?"

Once a month my wife makes a copy of her WORK folder and stores it there too.
The internal drive has a System folder and applications but it's iPhoto v2 and Safari v1 !!

Isn't there a way to open iPhoto and lead it to the Library folder you want?

I will study the link you gave me. Seems they had the same issue.

Ok...just for clarity, since I'm not exactly sure - what is your set up? Two internal drives? One the working/main drive (partitioned in two) and one the backup? Or am I missing something? Glad to know that you've got a backup. Have you tried pointing iPhoto to its library?

Try launching iPhoto and holding down the Option key as you do. It should ask you where the iPhoto Library is.

If it's still complaining, you can create a NEW library and then import all your photos into it. A pain to be sure (and I guess you'd lose all your changes) but at least you would have all your photos.

This kind of ridiculous behaviour is one of the reasons I've never used iPhoto for anything other than casual browsing. (I use Lightroom)

So, there are two different versions of iPhoto. The new version should be able to read all the Libraries after making updates to them, if needed. The old version will never be able to read any Libraries made by newer versions (assuming there are formatting/info differences, which sounds like the message your wife got).

Having two versions of the same app is asking for problems. Double-clicking a Library may open the wrong version or open the newer version and ask to convert the Library to the newer format. The older version may then not be able to open that Library after that. I suggest removing/deleting/erasing the older version.
    1. Open a Finder window.
    2. Navigate to the  oldest version (2?)
    3. Use the Archive or Compress item in the Finder's File Menu (in Leopard it's "Compress" it may have been "Archive" in Tiger...).
If you ever want to use the old version, you can unarchive it simply by double-clicking the icon. Remember, however, that any "updated" Libraries will probably not be readable by it.
    4. Now, either burn that old version onto a CD and then remove it from the HD or simply move it to the Trash and Empty the Trash.

I'm getting numerous solutions. Now I'm really getting confused! :-)

Paddy,
Yes, you've got it right about drive set up.

I launched iPhoto and pointed it to the iPhoto Library (#4) which is on the WORK partition of the G4 main drive.
I received the same message that started this post!
Yet, this set up worked fine for the past year or two!

XDriver,
iPhoto 6 is on the main drive in OSX10.4.11.
iPhoto 2 (which is never used) is on the Backup internal hard drive.
But I did Archive it as you suggested and dumped the old one completely.
Launched iPhoto with no change!

I'll try the apple forum advice from Paddy's link, but it'll have to be later.

I've always said computers can be magic some days, and I wanna blow them up on other days! ;-)

It sounds like you've got the problem described by some of the respondents in the Apple thread - for no known reason, iPhoto has decided not to acknowledge a previously working library, even though no changes or updates have been made.

Did you try pointing iPhoto at the BACKUP library? That might work, if there is corruption of the original.

Otherwise, I'd try downloading the iPhoto Library Manager mentioned in the Apple forum thread.

Finally had a chance to download iPhoto Library Manager and rebuild the Library. The GOOD news is iPhoto is working again and we can use it. The BAD news is that the the Previous Library was  7 gb in size and the Rebuilt Library is only 5 gb. What's missing and how can I possibly find out?

I still have both Libraries on my main drive and copies of them on my other internal drive.

Not necessarily anything is missing. One purpose/function of 'rebuilding' a library/drive/etc. is to cut out miss-identified stuff and/or items that may be scattered over more sectors than needed. If you still have the old libraries, perhaps that little app can compare the two? Can it print out a list of titles/dates/etc. to a file? If so, you should be able to compare the two files for differences...not by hand/eye, but with any app that can read a text file and compare it with another, such as a demo version of BBEdiit or even the free version of TextWrangler.
