Lion Panic, Panic Panic
« on: August 20, 2011, 07:26:19 PM »

Powered off the Mini last monday while we took a few days in the backwoods of Idaho, fishing, berry pickin, etc  and just general down time. biggrin.gif

Returning today the Mini immediately goes to Kernal Panic, Recovery Hd no help,  Fired up the back-up that I made just before leaving and it runs fine off of the back-up. Groaner.gif

Repaired disk with  "First aid" it says the disk is ok.  Repaired permissions. (there was a ton of em).  Still goes to Kernal Panic. The main message that shows up  is    "8x672901 Unable to find driver for this platform"  Groaner.gif

There are several other lines but This is probably the key (my guess) rant.gif

I did make a couple of copies of Lion but have not yet attempted to reinstall it.  It seemed to be working just lovely before we headed out.  Suggestions???? sos.gif

1. Have you tried starting in Safe Mode? Press and hold the shift key as soon as you get your hand/finger off then power button (theoretically, the key should be pressed immediately after you hear the startup chimes, rolleyes.gif ).
If that works, you may have some third-party startup items that need updating/removal.
Do you have a non-admin or just another user account set up? Turn off Automatic Login and try another account.
You might try disabling any Extensions for Safari, also, but it sounds like a hardware issue.

2. Do you have any BlueTooth accessories? If so, try turning them OFF before a restart and wait until well into the start up process (at least after the spinning 'gear') before turning them on.

3. Try starting up with no external devices except the wired keyboard & mouse even connected.

Is everything running through a good UPS? You have no idea what could have happened, power-wise, while you were gone...

Back up and running on Lion.  I had to reinstall.  A couple of observations FWIW.

1st:  I had made 2 copies of the OSX 10.7 install.  One I put on a partition  of an external hd.  The second I put on an 8gb flash drive.   My first attempt to reinstall  I  moved the install from the flash drive onto the desktop while running on the back-up. Did not attempt to install directly from the Flash drive.  Unsuccessful, was advised that the install  was not able to "verify".  I then successfully reinstalled from the partitioned hd.  Everything seems to be ok.

Opinion based on blind luck I think:

The whole issue was probably  caused by the power glitch of a week or so ago. Lion must have gotten corrupted then. When I left on Monday, I had not only "shut down" I physically unplugged the power adapter, so I do not think that anything happened during the time away. The Kernal panic(s) first appeared after that power hit. I was able to recover it but some really strange things occured.

Upward and Onward.

By "power adapter" I assume you mean the brick that powers the mini? I still encourage you to run all the computer stuff through a power monitor/conditioner. The power supplies today are generally not built with the old, huge capacitor of the past century and, therefore, have little, if any ability to maintain the power voltage needed during an even momentary power drop. If that happens during a disk write or even a refresh of some part of the OS's cache, ...well, you have see what happens... sad.gif
