OS 10.7, How to prevent Mail...
« on: September 12, 2011, 03:57:17 PM »
iMac Intel i3 21.5" OS 10.7.1, Mail 4.5 (version installed with OS 10.7)

Mail is not in my Startup Login list. I do not see a Mail preference to open mail upon Computer Startup.

How does one prevent Mail from opening upon Computer Startup?

I'm not using Lion but it seems as if com.apple.loginitems.plist may be corrupt. Naturally, it's located in ~/Library/Preferences and Lion hides ~/Library by default. Still, you should be able to get there by following the directions in Access User ~/Library Folder in OS X Lion. Then, move that plist to the desktop and log out/in (or restart). If the problem is solved, reset your login items and trash the bad plist. If not, put it back.

If Jon's solution doesn't fix things, how about posting a screen shot of what's in the Startup items list.

jchuzi and XABD,

Here are 2 Screenshots, one of the Users/Library/Preferences/.com.apple.loginitems.plist (3 files)
and one of the Systems/Preferences/Users and Groups/Loging window.

[attachment=2313:Users_Li...ferences.jpg]

[attachment=2312:System_P...n_window.jpg]

I trashed the 3 loging.plist files and restarted. This resulted in no change in that Mail opened again
upon restart.

What bugs me now is that even if I had trashed the 3 com.apple.loging.plist, my original System items were
still in my Systems/Preferences/Users and Groups/Loging window after Restart.

Could it be that one of my System Loging apps is causing this?

Well I just tried removing all System Loging apps, still no change after Restart, Mail opens.

jb,

Check your Mail Prefs.

General>Check for new messages> (I choose "Manually")

May possibly have something to do with it?

Might not be a prefs problem folks - at least not THOSE prefs.

It's the Resume feature that may be causing this.

https://discussions.apple.com/message/15959974#15959974

If you want to have the Resume feature still on, just make sure you quit Mail before you shut down. It works fine for me.

https://discussions.apple.com/message/15888366#15888366 (If Resume is on, then either check or uncheck the box at logout. It's checked by default)

General info on Resume and managing it:

Resume is probably what's causing it. Whatever you have open when you shutdown will open on each new start. You may be able to confirm this by noting what, exactly, is open in Mail when it starts. If it's the same item, that pretty much confirms that Resume is the culprit. I have a habit of closing all but four apps before leaving the Mac to shutdown automatically or manually (don't usually bother on a Restart, of course). That way, I don't even bother with Start up items anymore, unless an app (usually a 'faceless' one) asks to be included in that list

I started testing a new app yesterday that allows you to specify apps that you do not want to use the Resume function. So far, the only app I selected was Photoshop Elements. It was always opening the last edited image on start up, even though I was not quitting until I closed all images. Now it either opens the image(s) I double-click or just it's empty editing window! clap.gif

If you don't want to try that app, just close Mail before a Restart and see what happens. wink.gif

Thanks all.

By following your suggestions, Jack W's Mail "Manual" selection, and other's "Resume" selection(s), I no longer have Mail open upon Startup.
However I now have a "new" window opening upon Startup!

[attachment=2314:Opening_screen.png]
The panel on top of the Preference window is that of a program called "LazyMouse" which is already installed as seen at the bottom of the Pref window.

As suggested I unchecked The General Pref "Restore windows..." box as shown here.

[attachment=2315:General_Store.png]

Boy what a bunch of "if's and but's" this Lion has. In the meantime I use my solid as a rock 10.6.8 until such a time as I can fully tame this Lion.

I don't understand what LazyMouse has to do with anything. dntknw.gif We're still talking about Mail starting up in a manner that you don't want, correct?

By '"new" window opening upon Startup' do you mean a new, empty Mail message window, but Mail itself is not opening?! dntknw.gif

XABD.

As I wrote in my first sentence,....I no longer have Mail open upon Startup.

and

No, the "new" window has nothing to do with Mail, as the attachments show.

OK, if I understand it, the "new" window is System Prefs? What happens if you close/quit System prefs before shutdown/Restart and then Start up again?

The shade asking if you want to install another version of a Panel you already have installed is normal...when you have double-clicked a Panel you may have recently downloaded or one that is still available for double-clicking. Double-clicking a downloaded ".prefPane" file is how they are sometimes installed (the other way being to simply put it into the ~/Library/PreferencePanes folder. dntknw.gif

I'd still like to see a screen-shot of your Login Items list.

Finally, note that when you select Shutdown or Restart, there is a checkbox (selected by default) that asks if you want windows that are open to re-open on the next Start/Restart. I've heard/read that the global choice of not Resuming doesn't seem to affect that checkbox. I don't even know where a setting is to turn Resume off globally... Probably in one of Paddy's links. Although one of the options in Lion Tweaks turns it off in individual apps of your choice. dntknw.gif

jb, I can't help as I don't use 10.7, but it's an education reading all this.

Thanks XABD for a patience sans pareil.

1- OK, if I understand it, the "new" window is System Prefs? YES

2- What happens...then Start up again? The System Prefs Panel opens

3- The shade asking...~/Library/PreferencePanes folder. Thanks for the info

4- I'd still like to see a screen-shot of your Login Items list. It was shown in my today's 12:06 AM post. But here it is again.
[attachment=2316:Login_items.jpg]
5- Finally, note that when you select...Lion Tweaks turns it off in individual apps of your choice. I tried all of that to no avail.

Let's retire this subject. I will try to read further on 10.7. And may be one day in the long distant future I'm afraid I will find a way
to adapt myself to Lion. In my mind I am starting to think that Lion is to OS X what Vista was to Windows?
