Can't start up 10.6.3 on new Macbook Pro?
« on: September 19, 2011, 10:48:25 AM »
I have been presented with a new Summer 2011 Macbook Pro which came with 10.7 and apparently it won't run 10.6.3 but I'm wondering if anyone saw this anywhere in print or whether the newest 10.6.3 that I bought this summer is still not new enough!  I would like an option to run Rosetta and I'm sure that the only reason it won't is someone decided this was how things were going to work.

What do you mean by "apparently"? Did you try to install 10.6 on an another volume?

As I said in another topic, before installing 10.7,

1- I had SuperDupered my 10.6 internal drive on an external drive
2- Erased my internal drive
3- Partitioned my internal drive in 2 partitions
4- SuperDupered my 10.6 from the external drive to partition 1 of my internal drive
5- Installed 10.7 on partition 2 of my internal drive

The reasons to have both 10.6 and 10.7 on the internal drive were:
1- (And foremost) was to continue using my rock solid 10.6.8 while I was learning to use 10.7.
You no doubt read my various posts on my difficulties taming the new cat.
2- This allowed a faster booting of either system than if I had had installed one system on the internal drive
and the other on an external drive.

I suggest you do similar installations of both systems on separate drive or partitions. By the way
SuperDuper works with 10.7.

I agree with you about Rosetta. The someone is probably a new software supervisor on the Lion program
who did not know about Rosetta. I doubt the architecture of Lion is so different as to prevent a Rosetta like
piece of software from being installed in 10.7. Or the software team was pressed for time and thus dropped
Rosetta for the sake of expediency. They were probably more concerned about the "Resume" part of Lion!
Well maybe one day I'll come to appreciate this "Resume" thing!

Instructions for installing 10.6 on a new Mac that shipped with Lion:

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/government/how-t...-mac/10652?pg=4

As for Rosetta, I'm 100% SURE that it wasn't a new software supervisor who didn't know about it!! Apple has been warning that it would be dropped for quite some time. It wasn't an "oops, look what we forgot" moment. Supporting legacy software can only go on for so long. Apple supported it for 5 years. The writing was on the wall with 10.6 - Rosetta wasn't installed by default.

See this rather long MacRumors thread from February (when the developer releases of Lion lacked Rosetta and the news started going around) for more info on why Rosetta has been dropped:

Apparently means that it makes little chimey noises (not the normal one's) when you try to boot off the 10.6.3 that I bought this summer (as well as the older one).  Paddy, I'll try the process in the ZD-NET article!
