I wonder how he knows that? I wonder if he visited any other factories where practically all electronic devices, no matter the brand, are made? dntknw.gif I wonder if he sold all his Apple stock too early last year... Thinking.gif I gotta go, the 'kool aid' is chilled just right... rolleyes.gif

I came across an article on arstechnica last week with a bunch of comments, one of which really ticked me.  I had to respond.

My reply:

I watched my mother die recently. Near the end, one of the few things that put a smile on her face was looking at pictures and video of her family on the iPad I brought to the hospital. For months earlier she had enjoyed playing games, solving puzzles and marveling at the information that was literally at her crippled fingertips. She actually called it her "Happy Pad".

Yes, that shiny thing made a real difference for an 89 year old woman. Thank you Steve.

Splendid, elegant rejoinder, Kris, although it probably only registered on the legion of readers rather than the obtuse "monkey" who blemished the pages with his cynicism.

Bravo.

Just been watching a TV programme, iGenius - How Steve Jobs Changed the World on YouTube; a remarkable life story, told in 40 minutes of tributes and analysis from the Discovery Channel. I dare say most of you have already seen it.

Also, BBC's Click tech programme spent a good part of its show the weekend after he died on his and Apple's achievements. The 10-minute item is on the BBC iPlayer here. It's produced by the World Service, so should work outside the UK smile.gif

Superb article by David Gorski on Steve and his cancer.

http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/index....-of-steve-jobs/

With the authorized bio less than a week away and the 60 Minutes interview of the author wherein he quotes Steve as saying he wishes he hadn't waited to get the initial surgery, there seems to be a lot speculation and opinion swirling about - both in the regular press and in the medical community. This is probably the most balanced contemplation of the situation I've read yet.

Oh, does this happen to people who do not trust or understand medicine!
A family member of ours/by marriage/ decided not to treat his cancer, but to try alternative things.
Sad, he died shortly after making that bad decision. Way too young.

And there are people here in our community, who have done this, and suffered for it.

Also a classmate of our daughter sought alternative medicine for her young dog from a local vet who was a quack. The dog died, but the vet, he was not a licensed vet, was prosecuted and exposed in our local paper.
When will people wake up?

Steve possibly could be alive today, TODAY, if he had used his brain on his own health.

Good points, Jane. Medicine is far from perfect but it's the best that it has ever been since Hippocrates was alive. With all its flaws, it's based on more sound evidence than the alternatives.

Apple is supposed to post a video of the event but at this moment it is not up.

I think much of the backlash is due to the rather extreme comments made by his admirers. He did have a huge impact on nearly every life on our planet, but it may not be as big as some would suggest. And his real genius was, in my humble opinion, the willingness to follow his instincts and assume the risks that followed. With the increased risks came increased rewards. Much has been made of the public philanthropy of Bill Gates, also. I would have somewhat more respect for that if there was less 'publicity' in it. "Those who stand on the street corner and shout their prayers have already received they reward." BAJ translation laughhard.gif

I don't particularly put too much weight on any comments by the OWS® group, especially when they use the very tools that were created by the 99% they seem to hate.

The comparison to the media's treatment of John Lennon's death did not take into account the major difference in how the media itself has changed.  For the most part, especially the past ten years, it has devolved into an "anything goes" attitude that leaves little off the table. Had JFK or even Mother Theresa died today you can bet there would be negative reporting about some aspect of their lives (JFK had a lot hidden that was kept silent).

When someone like Jobs has such a widespread effect on so many lives you can bet someone, somewhere has had their toes stepped on.  Negative stories get more hits than positive ones.
