OS 9.1 vs. OS 9.2.2
« on: June 26, 2003, 04:26:30 PM »
I currently run OS9.1 on my Beige G3.

I just  got my Painter 8 upgrade so I can use it with OS 10.2.6.

It will also run with OS9.2.2 but not OS9.1.

I'd like to have it on both computers so I'm contemplating upgrading my System software
on the Beige G3 to 9.2.2.

Does anyone know if there are any issues with something not working if I upgrade to 9.2.2 from 9.1?

I thought I remembered something that Kelly or someone mentioned a while back and thought I'd check with TS before I hit the install button. unsure.gif

Not exactly an answer to your question, but perhaps you will find the comments of 35 individuals who installed 9.2.2 to be of benefit.

Thanks Harv.

Mixed reviews over there. wacko.gif

I just want to make sure my zip drive will work and my Iomega burner. I really need a new burner even though I have the built in one on the Quicksilver. That Iomega is dog slow.

Sounds like a roll of the dice . . .

You might want to install 9.2.2 on a separate partition first and see how it goes on your particular hardware/software for a while.

More of the same sort of thing as what Harve posted:

9.2.2 runs great GaryS. Additional Extensions for firewire and such. If you don't need the added inits. Simply uncheck them in the Extension Managers Control panel.

Gary, I run OS9.2.1 on a Beige G3 though I have 9.2.2 it gave me problems.

Can’t say why or what they were specifically, but Techtools nor Norton could straighten them out. Driver conflicts in some cases, Conflict Catcher continued to find a broken System File. I didn’t have the time to thoroughly check it out, I just dumped it and went back to 9.2.1....... your mileage may vary. ph34r.gif

Since you asked, here's my $.02 -

I upgraded to 9.21 (from 9.1), then soon to 9.2.2.

Ran it for several weeks or a month.

I decided that it was somewhat less stable than 9.1 had been, so I went back to 9.1.

Since I had saved a copy of my entire system folder (on my backup volume) before I began the whole upgrade process, it was pretty easy - boot to a system seedie, swap and rename the SFs, copy a few prefs (such as my Stickies file and Pando Calendar stuff), and fix a few aliases.

But YMMV.  I have heard from and read about many people who find 9.2.2 to be as stable (or more) than 9.1 and / or 8.6.

More input here, I have two beiges that run 9.2.2 for Classic in OS X.  No problems so far.  Once in a while my daughter has to boot into OS 9.2.2 to play games that don't run in Classic.  Seems to work fine.  But, less and less do I now boot into OS 9 since Jaguar.  98% of the time they are in OS X.

I have 9.2.2 on my beige G3 with internal Zip drive. I haven't had any problems. Well, none that I didn't cause myself.  blush-anim-cl.gif

I certainly haven't observed it being less stable than 9.1 was. If you're worried, follow kbear's prudent strategy.

I put 9.2.2 on a partition annd so far it seems faster than 9.1.

I'll see if or when any conflicts show up...maybe I'll install it over 9.1 if it runs well.

A lot less HDD activity. I wonder if it's the new drivers?

Now it see if Painter 8 will install. It runs great on OS 10.2.6. smile.gif

Well,

I can't get my Logitech optical mouse to work or my Wacom USB tablet under 9.2.2. Not a problem under 9.1.  upset.gif  taped.gif

Epaminondas,

I downloaded the latest drivers before and none of my USB works with OS9.2.2.

So, I installed Painter 8 under OS 9.2.2 into my Applications partition and then fired up
OS 9.1 and Painter 8 works fine with 9.1.....it just won't install under 9.1. wink.gif

Soooooo...I think I'll just wipe that partition with 9.2.2 clean. smile.gif

Hope this translation is correct:

"and then fired up OS 9.1" <-? Why 9.1.?
