Trouble With Toast
« on: July 02, 2003, 12:23:34 PM »
I have successfully burned CDs in the past, but I don't do it very often and now I am winding up with empty folders on the CDs.  This has also occured in the past but I do not recall how I fixed the problem.

My first bit of confusion comes when I put a new CD in the drive.  I get a dailog box asking me if I want to format the CD, with an option to start-up Toast.  It isn't clear to me whether I should first format the CD and then start-up Toast, or do something else altogether.

I'm afraid that I haven't been able to find much help in the Toast manual...

So I guess that I need a little Hand Holding in order to accomplish something that any self-respecting 8th grader can do with their eyes closed!

No answer for you here, just empathy. I don't even have a CD-R drive, or know if that's the right terminology. I wouldn't have a clue how to put something on a CD.

Now, if the program to "burn" CDs is called Toast, the drive must be a Toaster. The manual for my toaster gives explicit instructions on how not to burn things. Times are a changing!

There are two ways to make a CD. One uses Toast. One does not.

If you want to use Toast:

1. Run Toast.
2. Drag the files into the Toast window.
3. Put in a blank CD.
4. Click the Burn button in Toast.

If you do not want to use Toast:

1. Put in a blank CD.
2. Format the CD.
3. Drag the files onto the CD.
4. Use the Special->Burn CD command.

What Tacit posted mayo is just about it.

You get that dialog box asking you what do you want to do when you insert a blank.
If you know you want to use toast, fire up toast before you stick the blank in.

Okaaay, I just burned a back-up CD and I have a couple of questions...  The burn was apparently successful, but when Toast verified the disk I got several errors and then the disk did not appear on the desktop nor could I eject the CD.

After restarting the iBook the CD appeared, I could eject it and there are folders on the CD.  I tried opening a couple of files and that went without a hitch.

When I select the CD a window appears with the folder inside, but the window states that 'zero k" is available on the CD, even though I did a write session and there should be several hundred MBs remaining on the disk.

Would someone mind letting me know if this is acceptable behavior on the part of Toast?

If Toast said there were errors on the disc, that means there were errors on the disc. Usually, this happens because you are burning too fast (use a slower burn speed in Toast), or because you are using a bad brand of blank CD.

There is a BIG difference between different brands of blank CD! TDK and Verbatim are among the best, memorex among the worst.

A CD, once it is recorded, will *always* show 0K available. It makes no difference if you fill ed the CD or not.

If you want to add more to a CD later, you must record it using the Toast "Write Session" button, not the "Write Disc" button. It will still show zero K free; you use Toast to record more information, which will appear on your desktop as a second CD (that is, you will insert the CD and TWO icons will show up--one for the first session and one for the second session).

Hi Tacit...

I use TDK CDs and burned the CD at 4x, the max for my iBook combo drive.

Try recording slower, or try a Verbatim CD instead.

I always use Verbatim CD-R's now. I'm convinced they are superior to the rest.

This fixes (sometimes) a myriad of Toast v5.2 problems:

Click once on the application icon, Right Click or Control+Click on your mouse and select "Show Package Content". In this folder Open the "Contents" folder. Then Open MacOS Folder. Then delete the "Roxio.dat" file, empty the trash, restart the application and you will be ask to re-enter your serial number. That's it.

Harv,

I tried the steps that you suggested, but the only way I can access the Contents file is to just click through the Toast folder.  When I try to delete the Rox.dat file I get a window saying that "This command can not be used with the items in this package."

Control-clicking on the Toast app icon doesn't do anything but bring up the typical menu.
