Mail problem. . .HELP!
« on: April 19, 2012, 12:52:21 PM »
A couple of days ago, I got a piece of mail from a friend, with an attachment, supposedly in the body of the message, but not there. When I clicked on it, in the header, I got the message, "plug in missing". . . I didn't think much about it, saved it & then opened it.  But then it happened again yesterday. . . This morning, I tried to send a couple of attachments in emails, and got this:  "ssing Plug-" which I took as the same message.  So, I ran "repair permissions" and tried it again. . .  Same result!  wallbash.gif  Anybody?  Any ideas?  As usual, Thanks in advance.

Can you give us a hint as to what plug-in was mentioned? wink.gif And, if you know, you might want to search, find and install it and see what happens. If you can't find it for the Mac, you probably will never be able to see whatever it is you were sent. dntknw.gif

Ed, see this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/269595...=0&tstart=0

Although it didn't work for the original poster, many seemed to feel that it was something to do with Java, so you might want to start with some of those suggestions.

If that email your friend sent is still on the server, I'd suggest you have a look at it in web mail to see if you can see any attachment.

Also - you might want to consider adding your hardware & OS info to your "My Macs"....because my next question is....what OS and which version of Mail? wink.gif

Sorry, guys; I should have gotten back to you faster, but I spaced on this.  Paddy's link led me to the problem and the solution did work for me, although I had to quit Mail, do the "fix" and then restart.  Apparently it does have something to do with Java, which I had completely disabled, but as soon as I re-enabled the J2SE 5.0 through the Java preferences utility, everything worked fine.

Jim, the "missing plug-in" was not specified.

Tacit, it wouldn't even show a simple jpg. . . I'm a little leery about leaving it with the Java going, but since Apple's "update" doesn't work on OSX 10.5.8 (Tiger, since nothing newer will run on the PPC Quad), I downloaded the little app that will enable me to keep checking on the Flashback worm. . .
