This is an exchange between me and Imation. Please read first, then come back to this. I tried his first suggestion that I press 'erase disk' and got this message: The disk 'hard drive' could not be erased because it is the startup disk, which contains the active system software. I also turned off the recommended extensions (those that were there.) USB Apple Monitor Module, Device extension, software locator, print driver, cd burner. I tried to download an update but got involved in downloading Macromedia, as suggested in a window, then Acrobat Reader which I don't seem to have and  am now thoroughly confused. The disk is still stuck in the superDisk, plugged into the hub. I'm in a mess.  I've reinstalled the OS 9.1 so many times that Apple System Profiler shows as mans three duplicates of many things.

I have an iMac ,circa 1999, running on OS 9.1,233 mhz, 160 ram and an Imation superDisk , with a 120MB diskette,purchased at the same time. I found it necessary to erase my HD and reinstall the OS. When I finished, I hit the 'erase disk' button instead of 'eject disk.'  For several hours a window said that it was rewriting. Late at night,  I finally unplugged everything and restarted the next day. A message came up saying the disk is unreadable. In order to eject the disk, I tried reinstalling Imation with the  CD and I got a message saying 'This model of computer will not startup with this disk.' The disk will not eject because the installation was unsuccessful and the 'eject disk' button is grayed out. I have ordered a new disk but I'm wondering how I can update the software. When I try,using the CD, I keep getting the same message. Please advise. I would also like a quote on the cleaning system.

I would appreciate hearing from you as soon as possible.

Thank you for contacting Imation. Your questions and suggestions are welcome.

To make your USB SuperDisk drive work properly with OS 9.0 or higher, do not load any additional extensions or drivers, because support for the SuperDisk drive is native to OS 9.0 and higher.

It is possible that your drive locked up during the erase process, please try the following to resolve your drive issues.
1.  If your drive is plugged into a power strip, you should plug the drive directly into a wall outlet.
2.  If you have other USB device or are using a HUB.  Try the plugging the SuperDisk drive directly into your computer with your other USB devices unplugged.  Your mouse and keyboard can stay plugged in.
3. Try erasing the diskette again.
Note: If your drive locked up, unplug the power to the drive for 5 seconds and then reconnect the power.

If you did load drivers; Go into your Extensions Manager and ensure that the following extension is enabled:

USB AppleMonitorModule
USB DeviceExtension
USB SoftwareLocator

The following extensions that were used in OS 8.5/8.6 should be disabled, if they are present in your Extensions Manager:

USB Floppy Enabler
USB HID Universal Module
USB Mass Storage Extension
USB Mass Storage Support
USB Print Driver
USB Super Disk Driver
USB Super DiskUT Driver

If you have a CD-Burner and you are using Toast Software, try disabling all the extensions that start with "Toast" as they can also conflict with the SuperDisk drive.

Toast USB Support -- (Needed if you have a USB drive, but is a know conflict)
Toast FireWire Support -- (May be needed if you have a FireWire Burner)
Toast CD reader -- (This is the only one you should need to burn and normally does not cause a conflict)

If you would like to try installing a driver you must use the our newest driver which can be downloaded for free from www.imation.com this driver has resolve some OS 9.x issues.

Am I understanding this correctly that the disk itself is stuck in the driver?? Then she should first try to eject it (holding down the mouse key could help, or using a paper clip) and if it's not ejecting I asume she has to have it taken in since it might be stuck in here mechanically.

When she's reinstalling the system, is she making sure that the new system is clean of all those extension mentioned? I.e. a clean Mac OS system, nothing else on it than what's installed. Then try the drive.

Did she also do as suggested, have the Superdisk sit without power for a few minutes and then hook it up directly to the computer (no hub or chain) and on it's own power outlet?

Yes, Cyberpet, I tried all of those things and the disk popped out. I put the disk back in and a box popped up asking if I wanted to initialize. I clicked on initialize and another box popped which said: Creating Directory, with the little watch going around and around.  It's has been 12 hours so far. Is that normal? I sure don't think so.

Do you have any disk utilties? Like Diskwarrior etc that might be able to fix the disk? Sounds as if it might be faulty.

Have you tried another disk to make sure that the drive itself is working properly?

I have ordered Norton from OWC and I'm waiting for it to be delivered. I agree that the disk seems to be faulty and I have also ordered a new disk. The mail seems to be slow these days, especially coming from the USA.  Thanks for your interest.
