Need help changing my Avatar
« on: September 25, 2012, 03:57:24 PM »
I've got a different avatar that is a picture of me taken with photo booth and saved as a 90x77x24BPP (bits per pixel) JPG that the TS board doesn't seem to like!  I think I've had this trouble before but don't know how I solved it!

The BPP shouldn't have anything to do with it as 24 is standard for a jpg (as far as I know). Also 90 pixels x 77 pixels is withing the board size limitation. The only other factor is whether it's larger than 50KB?

Are you receiving any type of alert? Anything else you can tell us?

PS: Moving this over to tech and adjusting the title a bit so folks know you need help.

Considering that your avatar is now different, John, I'm assuming whatever the problem was, it's now fixed? wink.gif

Looks like you got it figured out. smile.gif

BTW, I noticed the "title" (πάλινδρóμος)  you gave yourself under your avatar and out of curiosity I put it in Google to get a translation.  Amazingly, the thread you started about driving through Kentucky came up third in the search.

Color me impressed. yes.gif

No, the one I have now isn't the one that I was trying to change to; this is the old one.  Maybe it's the size factor?  I'll try reducing the resolution!

πάλινδρóμος is roughly "palindrome" (very roughly according to a greek friend) which someone here decided was what my avatar name was!  Didn't know I was up on the yahoo or whatever list!

Later: I reduced it slightly and reversed RGB settings and it does show up in "My Controls" as the new avatar picture but it doesn't show up on the forum pages (still showing my old one).  I never got an error and it did switch it at that point in time but when I came back the next morning it had gone back to my previous picture.

The disk size shows: 1.37 KB (1,400 Bytes)

The memory size shows: 18.29  KB (18,728 Bytes)

But I suppose the second size would be application specific (Irfanview in this case) so probably meaningless!  Neither is over the 50KB though!  Maybe there is something incorrect in the way Irfanview is writing the color edited file (originally a picture taken with Photobooth on my G5 iMAC at home).

Later: Solved it, I saved it as a PNG and then uploaded it to the avatar profile and now it's changed!

The avatar I saw when I posted above is the one I see now (dark shirt with an otherwise greenish hue).  I think the reason you didn't see it at first was due to your cache still showing you the old one.

This is probably what you are remembering:

WOW! I can finally see a face in your avatar image! It's amazing how the eye and brain sometimes need help from the language area to actually comprehend what is being 'seen!' The palindrome references didn't help at all until I re-read "avatar name" [emphasis added]. As slow a reader as I am, I still don't slow down enough! wallbash.gif Maybe my 'brain clock' needs a new spring/controller/crystal?! flail.gif blush-anim-cl.gif

Shrinking it down to that size probably didn't help a lot but the original made me look a lot more like my father than any other picture of me.  Before I started messing around with this I had intended to change it over to this one for the pre-Halloween period but was testing and surprised when the forum didn't seem to like the jpeg version of the file!

Not judging, but the greenish coloring reminds me a current GE lightbulb ad... showing what many early "green" (ecologically, that is) bulbs often had blue/green/etc coloring that were great around halloween... of course, being an ad, they exaggerate a wee bit... rolleyes.gif

Specifically, in your image, I kept trying to figure out what the right edge was. And I combined all the light colored areas together instead of seeing your face separately. The right edge still looks rather like a side view of a "ghost with a big smile and wearing glasses! OH! I just saw a cloud pass by that looked like an upside down, ferris wheel, being turned by a giant! It had with different types of seats/carriers on it, one was an airplane, another was a bulldozer, one was a whale, one was... flail.gif wacko.gif jawdrop.gif blueeek.gif fool.gif swoon.gif

When I get home I'll post the original picture from Photobooth!  I don't remember what else was in the picture myself but the filter was a four way one with the same picture and four different color schemes!

My only concern is that you are safe and that the "ghost" is gone!!! eek2.gif laughhard.gif

I think the "ghost" is pillows on the futon; the black shirt is really what I had on!
