A new Mail doen't work in Snow Leopard?
« on: October 03, 2012, 07:12:58 PM »
I just downloaded new updates from Apple.

I tried to open Mail and it gave me this error message:

"You can't use this version of Mail on this version of Mac OS X. You tried to open Mail version 4.5 (1084-1085 in:

          /Mail 10-39-45-061/Mail.app

It can't be used on this version of Mac OS X (I am using OS 10.6.8). Try opening the version of Mail located in the Applications folder on your computer. For more information, click the Help button."

I tried opening the Mail program in my App. Folder, but I get the same message. I tried the Help button, but there was no reference to this issue. I tried the usual places online that might offer info without success.

Any ideas out there from the Techies?

First, please change the title of your thread to "A new version of Mail doesn't work in Snow Leopard" or, better yet, "Version 4.5 of Mail won't work in my Snow Leopard 10.6.8."

Reason? 4.5 is not the new version of Mail, that would be 6+

The first thing I'd do would be to reinstall the version you previously had. It should be easy to find in Time Machine. Go back to just before the date you installed the version that's not working.

Did you use the 10.6.8 Combo Updater? If not, get it <from Apple> and see if it doesn't automatically install the correct version.

Last but not least, what is the version of the Mail app that is in your Applications folder? Just do a command-i on it and the Info window should pop up and show you that. If you're in Column view, you don't even have to do the command-i part, just select the app and its info will show in the next column. It may be the 3+ version that should have been updated when you installed SL. At least the Combo version of the installer will do that.

I've tried everything you suggested with the same result. Same error message. I downloaded the combo, restarted and the same error message appeard. I'm baffled, as the combo should have been the replacement for the other version. It came up as the 4.5 version! How can that be when the download is clearly marked 10.6.8?

10.6.8 is the version of Mac OS X, the operating system. Other programs have their own version numbers. For example, with Mac OS X 10.6.8, I am running Safari version 5.1.7 and Mail version 4.6.

It looks like you for some reason moved your Mail program out of the Applications folder. You should keep your Applications in your Applications folder. if you move Mail out of the Applications folder and then do a system update, this error can happen. The fix is discussed here:

By "No Mail" I'm assuming you mean there is no Mail.app in your Applications folder. Is that correct?

Hi. Did you follow the instructions that apple has listed in the above article? If so, then I would follow the links listed in the article and re-download both the Mac OS X Update v10.6.8 Combo v1.1 and the Security Update 2012-004, and then reinstall them from these fresh copies.

Yes, you are correct. "No Mail" means that Mail 4.6 which I had and tried your suggestion, is no longer on my computer!! I have Mail 4.5, but no 4.6. I had both before the "fix".

I am geting mail through Comcast, but not with Apple Mail. I'm lost.

Did you try the Updaters suggested by Kimmer? They're at Apple.

An option is to reinstate the version of Mail on your 10.6 DVD by using Pacifist and then run Software Update to get you up to speed.

Yes I did. I just cannot figure out where Mail 4.6 went.

What are you using to search your drive?
What "View" do you use for a Finder window? Column, Icon or List?

I use the system profiler to search and the files are in list form.

When I tried the combo update I had both Mail 4.6 and 4.5 in the list. Mail 4.6 is no longer in the system profiler list.

Sorry to take so long between replies, but I am bein nurse to my wife who just had a full knee replacement.

First, take care of your wife! yes.gif

Uhmmm...never thought of using that for search! Most use the Finder to...uhmn...find things. I don't care for it that much (I use a third-party Finder replacement) but it does have a search function built-in. There should be a search box in the upper right-hand part of any Finder window, just make sure the "Tool Bar" is showing.

Select Show Tool Bar if it's not showing

Now you can see the Search box

Sort by Name

Or just use Column View and stuff is automatically sorted by Name

At least this way you should be able to find anything in your Applications Folder that has "Mail" as the first part of its name. Just report your results when you have time and/or your wife is better! wink.gif

Xairbusdriver,

I've gone through all of those search methods without success. The only Mail verion I have is 4.5 and when I attempt to open it I get that "you can't use this verion of Mail with this version of Mac OS X" message.

I don't have a disc of Snow Leopard so I can't use my copy of Pacifist.
