Do you have any external, bootable drives?
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

No, the only external drives are backup only.

Just to be safe, dismount and then disconnect all external drives.

Delete the updater you downloaded earlier.

Now, download the combo <updater at this link>. Please report where it appears on your drive, its path would be handy. smile.gif

Do you have any kind of graphics editor? iPhoto might even work to convert a screen capture to a jpeg and crop out un-needed areas.

I have no drives connected and deleted the previous updater.

I downloaded the new updater which appeared on my desktop. That is where it resides now.

OK! Let's run that thing! But only to the point where is gives you a chance to select a location. There will be the normal "Introduction", "Read Me" and a "License" part. But the next text that appears will have some info about how much space will be used. However, if there is a button labeled something like "Change Install Location..." inside the text box, just above the "Go Back" and "Install" buttons, STOP!

If there IS a "Change Install Location..." button, click it and tell us what your choices are.

If that button is NOT there, please confirm what other buttons are available?

It's ready to install, however, there is no choice as to where to install it. No other icons are available.

There is one place to install it: on the hard drive.

That's it!

Maybe my only recourse is to upgrade to Mountain Lion??

OK! Go for it! The combo installer should reinstall any/all missing apps. smile.gif

Very frustrating!!

You do have Mail in your Applications folder and nowhere else on your hard drive, right?

And that version of Mail is...?

If I recall correctly, you stated that you had absolutely no copies of Mail on your drive. If so, then the one now installed is the one from the Combo Installer. I'm not home right now and can't efficiently search the web, so I can't recall exactly what version should be usable. So, for now, just tell us the version you are seeing. Also tell us exactly the path to it, all the way from hard drive root ( "/" ).

It would be great if you tried using the Search function of Finder, just type command -F, when the Finder is the active, front-most app. Be sure it is searching your whole drive, not just your "Home" folder, also.

Back in your first post you had the following:
QUOTE
/Mail 10-39-45-061/Mail.app
What exactly is "/Mail 10-39-45-061" and why is a copy of Mail in there? dntknw.gif

!st I'll reply to Tacit

I now have Mail v. 4.5 on my hard drive. That is the only copy of Mail on my computer and yes it is in the Applications folder.

Reply to Xairbusdriver

After the Combo Update all I have is Mail 4.5 which is the incorrect version (version 4.6 is what is needed)
"/Mail 10-39-45-061" is the path from the root by doing the search -F on my HD. I also checked the "Get Info" command and It also indicated that is the path.

I believe you. smile.gif What I don't understand is where or why you have a folder/directory named "Mail 10-39-45-061" with Mail installed in it. Even on 10.6.8, the path should be "/Applications/Mail"! Is the Mail 4.5 the one that is in that path (/Mail 10-39-45-061/Mail)?

Is there anything else in "/Mail 10-39-45-061"?

I'm assuming you must have an "Applications" directory/folder. That's where Mail needs to be. Move it there. Delete any and all alias', including it's appearance in your Dock. Other than the Dock, any alias should have a small curved arrow on the lower left-hand corner of its icon.

Apple installed software should not be moved from where it is normally installed. Most apps are in the "Applications" folder/directory. Most utilities are in the "Utilities" folder/directory. If you or anything else moves them out of there, they will not be updated by any later System or app updater. I think that is why the Combo updater is not 'seeing' any "Mail.app" to update.

FYI, my D-i-L is running Mail 4.5 (1084) right now in 10.6.8 on her MBP (although I'm sure she's behind some updates...). Not sure why it won't run for you... assuming it is in your Applications directory/folder, not in "/Mail 10-39-45-061".

I just don't understand why a folder named "/Mail 10-39-45-061" is even being created.

Before I ran the Combo Updater I made sure that Mail 4.5 was the only item named Mail in the Applications folder. When the Combo was done that folder was in the Applications folder.

This is the way the folder contents looked:

AvailableFeeds
BackupTOC.plist
DefaultCounts
Envelope Index
LSMMap2
Mail
Mail Downloads
Mailboxes
MessageRules.plist
MessageRules.plist.backup
MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3
Metadata
OpenedAttachments.plist
POP-d.plank1@mail.comcast.net
RSS
SearchHistory.plist

I am running OS X 10.6.8

And my Mail is also v4.5

in

Macintosh HD>Applications

My personal mail is on Macintosh HD>Users>MyUserAccount>Library>Mail

Where MyUserAccount is my username.

MeThinks that Mail v4.5 is the correct version for 10.6.8

Are you sure you're running 10.6.8

Where did you get the idea that Mail should be v4.6 ?

(a question for Tacit - what is the correct version of Mail in 10.6.8?)

My last update was the 10.6.8 Combo updater which installed Mail v4.5 (if it wasn't there before.)

FWIW,

Jack

The folder you describe above is in your Macintosh HD:Users:dplank:Library folder, not in MacintoshHD:Applications

The Macintosh HD:Applications folder should only have the Mail application, not all those other things.

I ain't no expert like Tacit, but that's the way I see things.
