Microsoft big problems

Joan here, on my way to try to bail out my friend (the one I talked into getting a Mac AND switching to System X and is now tearing her hair out). When she opens a Word document that she originally created in 9, from the OPEN menu in Word for System X, it opens up in Power Point! She doesn't even have Power Point installed on her computer for system 9, but it is included in the Microsoft Office for X. I suggested she go to her Word 98 file (in system 9) and Save As Rich Text, or text only, or some such choice but the choices are Save File As Type, or presentation, or Power Point. When she copies and pastes the document from Word 98 to Word for OS X, it shows up with various fonts and bizarre formatting. Please! Any suggestions? At all???? wacko.gif

What happens if she drags/drops the file icon on the Word icon? It should open right up.???

If that works, I'd be curious what happens if she then quits, and then opens the file by either double clicking on it or using the "Open" menu in Word. unsure.gif

Joan. Have her click a document once, then do a Get Info. smile.gif

Under selection Open With have her choose the right Application.

Should be an option to make all open with that.

Also wouldn't hurt to Repair Permissions with the Disk Utility. smile.gif

Joan, This may fix things...

Have your friend:
1. Click once on the Word document to select it.
2. Get Info (Command + I)
3. When the next window opens, toggle the "Open With" and select "Word" if that option is present. If not, choose "Other" and  navigate to the Word Application and then select that.
4. When presented with the option to "Change All", do so.

From now on, all such documents should open in Word.

Yay! Took me about three minutes! She thinks I'm a genius. Big round of applause, thank you. I never ever knew about that Get-Info-Open-With-Change-All.

Made her day, made my day.
