OK...I understand all the words "traveling market....Lined up on the pavement, etc., etc....", but I don't understand...

Obviously 'they' must arrive by boat with all their wares (fresh, hopefully), and set up shop for a number of days...
How can 'they' make enough ( wares, $$$, etc.) to make this profitable for 'them' and affordable for you??

We have "weekend / farmers" markets, where local farmers or those with large gardens sell to those of us who don't have room to grow things, hate to get down on our knees for fear of never getting up again, or only turn things brown with our 'poison' thumbs. But they only travel relatively short distances, not to the end of Gods earth, to sell their wares.

Brief discussion would be greatly appreciated, inquiring minds want to know...

*** sucks teeth ***

It is the same for everyone who brings anything up here, be it for the shops, for private use, for anything really.  We all pay extra.  We expect to.  Even Tesco's charges more for stuff than on the mainland.  Hell, we even pay 20p a litre more in diesel and petrol than everyone else and we have our own oil terminal!

Highlands & Islands - the dreaded words on all postage and packaging too.  If it comes in the post, we pay more, mostly even though Royal Mail don't charge extra, but couriers do.

Nothing in the market was "cheap & cheerful" but it was to be fair tat and we all knew that.  What it is, though, is different and Shetlanders love that.  A taste of the mainland and they will happily pay over the odds for that.

The way I look at it is that we don't pay for meat much (most is free) and fish.  We have an amazing place to live in and yes it is very expensive but it does keep the grockles and tourons away!  You have to really want to be here to live here.

I absolutely love the pictures of the dressed up ponies in town; all the kids and folks with smile on their faces. . .even the guy with the collection device.  They usually have a a 10 man crew of cleaners thoughout the American Royal parade in Kansas City to keep up behind the horses; the kids used to ask "why didn't they go at home!"  We also have a small parade at Christmas time with lots of horses and ponies and even minature horses pulling little traps although I don't think that's exactly fair to the little one's!

Congratulations to Floss and to you, of course.  SO glad that it was the 'big' letter rather than the 'small' one...

Congratulations, again, to you all.

Thank you.  I am so proud of both my daughters.  One at St Andrews and one at St Hilda's, Oxford.  My dream for them has come true.
