Internet Explorer Prefs?
« on: July 09, 2003, 09:33:42 AM »
I just recently had a change from ATTBI to Comcast and ever since I have been unable to change my start up home page from Comcast. I change it and it will be ok for that session but when I restart the program it is back to Comcast's home page. So frustrating and unlike in OS 9 I cannot easily find prefs files for programs. I know they are suppose to be in User:Library:Preferences but alas I don't see it.

To set the home page in OS X, go to "System Preferences"/"Internet"/"Web"/Home Page.

I guess I didn't make myself very clear Bill. I know how to set the home page. The problem is no matter how many times I set it to my favorite home page, Google, it keeps reverting to Comcast every time I quit IEX and start it up again. Go figure.

Also on an unrelated subject. I have my prefs for TechSurvivors set to notify me of responses to my posts but it isn't working anymore since moving to the new server.

Regarding the notification from TS on thread post, double check your profile settings or redo them. Also your email is set to go to a .mac account, is that still correct?

I remember someone having the same trouble with comcast/@home hompage reverting but danged if I can remember what the answer was. I just start with a blank page then click on whatever I choose to go to from the toolbar.

I made one change to my email settings- - - include a copy of post . . .  - - -and all works now since I got notified you wrote a reply. I guess I didn't think that box needed to be checked just to get the old fashion notification that someone had replied and the link to read it. This works so I am a happy camper once more.

On the IEX issue, I have tried the blank page idea also with no results. I will just eliminate the prefs and see where that leaves me. I guess they are in my main Library folder, but delving into OS X does not make me feel as confident as I was with good 'ol OS 9.

IE preferences are located in Home/Library/Preferences. Look for the file "com.microsoft.explorer.plist".

Have you tried setting the home page in another browser to try to determine if the problem is with IE or comcast?

Yes, it is not Comcast. Safari and Netscape both work normally. I will eliminate the prefs to see if that does it. But this brings up another issue for me. I would love to go 100% with Safari but it doesn't work properly with either Bank of America or Schwab, the two most used accounts I have on teh Internet, and all my bug reports to Apple (over many, many months) have gone without results. Other people must bank where I bank and trade where I trade so it puzzles me why these problems haven't caught the attention of Apple.

OK, this is getting quite interesting. I trashed the "com.microsoft.explorer.plist" file and restarted IEX. All my settings were still there. The homepage of comcast.net, my autofills, etc. Where did it get the information? Is Microsoft now in my head too?

IE stores that info in the "Explorer" folder which is also located in Home/Library/Preferences.

Rick, are you sure you changed the home page in the SYSTEM Preferences? (NOT the Explorer prefs) Reason I ask, is that I was having the same problem - with both Safari AND IE, until I changed the SYSTEM preferences. Didn't matter how many times I changed the Safari or IE prefs - it always reverted every time I restarted the browser until I fixed the system prefs. Now it seems to be ok. smile.gif

Rick,

I found this in a thread at MacIntouch. Maybe it applies to you?

QUOTE
You can change the Comcast home page, The trick is
to make sure your not running any other MS app's like Entourage namely. Explorer and Entourage share some of the some preference files and any changes made to your home will get changed back if Entourage is running.

Do a clean reboot, make sure Entourage is not running, change your home page and it should stick.
