Upgrading my Netscape - want CD
« on: July 09, 2003, 12:45:06 PM »
From what I can gather on their "browser central" area, v7.1 is not for OS9. It appears that 7.02 will work (PowerPC) but they only seem to have 7.1 available on CD. I guess I'll have to try other sources. You'd think getting it straight from its developer would be the easiest!  doh.gif

Yup Gregg... Netscape has decided to jump on the "get with OS X bandwagon"... whether you're ready or not!  upset.gif

You can download the full install from here:

Netscape 7.02

I hope you find a CD... but unfortunately NS7.1 is now the most up to date version... it runs on everything "except" Classic Mac OS...  wallbash.gif

I think Airbusdriver has 7.0 on CD.

and Gregg I know you don't want to go the download route again, but in case anyone does
http://wp.netscape.com/download/archive/cl...archive70x.html

is the link for NS' "archive" of "older" versions.

I actually did find the 7.0 CD on Netscape's web site. It was staring me in the face, but I got distracted by the more flashy 7.1 graphics. I've ordered it, and just for the cost of shipping!

Are there known problems with 7.0 and OS 9.2.2? Is there a "patch" to upgrade 7.0 to 7.02 out there? I think my dial-up could handle a smaller download.

I think in the preferences somewhere in NS7.0 you can choose to do a "Smart Update" if that's what it's still called... you do it while online and it updates the bits and pieces you want.

It's in the Advanced sections in the preferences for my NS4.76... smile.gif

db, will that update 7.0 to 7.1? eek2.gif

I won't get the 7.0 CD for at least a week.

I'll report back on the installation. I do plan to copy everything
first, in case it wipes out the prefs. I've never installed Netscape from
a CD before.

Anyone with experience using 7.0 with OS 9.2.2? Will I need or want to update to 7.02?

CD arrived early. I may not have time to get to it for more than a week!

Doesn't anyone know about the OS9.2.2 and 7.0 combo?

Gregg Netscape's site states that NS7.1 is OS X only... I think you'll have to use NS7.02 if you want a Classic version... wink.gif

db, yeah, I know 7.1 is only for X. I have a vague recollection of problems with an earlier version of Netscape. I just don't remember if it was v6 with OS8.6 or v7 with OS9.2 or what. That's why I'm wondering if 7.0 will "get along" with OS9.2.2 or if I really need 7.02

If that is the case, I wonder if there is an "update" from 7.0 to 7.02 that would be a small download. Failing that, I'd have to locate a CD of 7.02 and I didn't see than on their web site.

The iconic Netscape browser is about to disappear.

Netscape owner AOL has made redundant most of the staff working on new versions of the venerable net browser.

AOL said it will keep the Netscape brand alive and still support old editions of the software but it will not produce any new releases.

AOL's ditching NS and many staff are going to Mozilla. The above from:

Gregg... I can't see any reason why NS7.0 wouldn't work with OS9.2.2... I'm wondering if you didn't have your troubles with Netscape 6 of some version, it was trouble.

The one reason I "would" recommend an upgrade to NS7.02 if you can is for the bug fixes and there was also a security problem that was addressed in one of those updates. I'm not sure that it was all that severe though, so maybe just try NS7.0 and see how you like it. If all works well, you could either just leave it at that or decide to update it to the 7.02 version.

I've been running 7.01 with OS 9.1 with few problems. I have many of the 9.2.2 extensions in my system folder for processor, video and X compatibility for my old machine just not the whole system.

As DB said the main reason for the uptick in number was for a few bugs which I doubt would be critical. There isn't a small upgrade for the fixes, you do have to download the whole file again unfortunately. Explorer operates the same way with upgrades.
