Norton Mobile Insight Discovers Facebook Privacy Leak:
http://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/nort...ok-privacy-leak

Of particular note, Mobile Insight automatically flagged the Facebook application for Android because it leaked the device phone number. The first time you launch the Facebook application, even before logging in, your phone number will be sent over the Internet to Facebook servers. You do not need to provide your phone number, log in, initiate a specific action, or even need a Facebook account for this to happen.

According to Google Play, hundreds of millions of devices have installed the Facebook application and a significant portion of those devices are likely affected.

What else do they download from your smart phone???

Do You use Facebook???

I don't

I would assume one's mobile phone number would be similar to one's IP address when accessing anything on the intermess with it. dntknw.gif Maybe only with Android? dntknw.gif I don't use that or FB... wink.gif

I use FB on my Droid phone. When I installed the FB app it flat out said it would be transmitting my mobile number and that I would have to authorize it to prove who I was. I'd already used my mobile number when I registered at FB years ago, so it was no biggy to me. I don't bank, or shop, or anything else on my phone. I've never considered it that secure.

You can read all the stuff the FB app has access to (and it's lengthy and a bit scary) here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?...ay5rYXRhbmEiXQ..

Not to defend FB (because there's loads about it that I don't like, but that's another whole discussion that we've had several times around here), but how safe is Symantec/Norton??? I stopped trusting them years ago.

Maybe I should find an anti-virus app for my phone. dntknw.gif Maybe I should give it up and go read instead. wink.gif

I am on Facebook, but very limited. I do not use FB on my phone. I had my email on my phone when I first bought it, but took it off after only a month.

Ditto what you said about Norton.

As I said before, Norton used to have good software under Classic, but they sure screwed that up royally under OS X.

I just try to keep my keyboard unplugged when I'm not at the computer. That keeps our cat off the intermess. She doesn't like that but without opposable thumbs, it keeps my downloads safer...

Same with me, no FB on my iPhone, but have to have it on the computer, as thats how the young relatives in our family communicate with pictures and fun stuff and so forth. But for a real message, we all switch over to email.

"Start"? Or admit it? rolleyes.gif

Would any thinking person not know they are surely already doing this? The difference is an 'opt-out' choice that may not be hidden...

In other news, police report that homicide victims seldom speak to them!

Another policy change coming soon. It's supposed to be posted on one of their blogs; an attempt to act all 'feely-touchy' and oh-so concerned about its 'products' information. The big change is that they plan on using facial recognition software on you Profile image so they can find it in images posted by anyone else that might have you in it. It will be on by default, of course...

Apparently, these Policy changes come about every six months. Do you read through them? I haven't bothered since attempting to delete my account some years ago.

Having read about the new FB stuff, I decided to remove my photos. Took me a while, but they are all gone. Of course, I only have FB's word that they'll really remove them.  rolleyes.gif Anyhow, I don't use FB for much any more. I keep up with a few family members and a few friends and I could easily give it up if they would use email. tongue.gif Let's face it, the world would be so much better if it ran my way. rofl.gif

I am sincerely thinking of weaning myself off of Facebook.  The latest renovation of their policy saying they own my pictures is "really" something that I find irksome.  It's not that I care whether the picture I have of the hugeness of my being in my swimsuit jumping into the lake is likely to appear in an ad for breath mints; but mainly the other people who I have taken care "not" to identify in my pictures but who are now routinely being identified by FB's facial recognition.  I hardly think it's fair.

ABD, your cat sent me a text to tell you that you're a cheapskate and should get at least a Mac Mini for the kitty with a nice bluetooth keyboard to go with it.   laugh.gif

If I don't get my iMac cleaned up/verified soon, I may give it to her!!! I was greeted this morning saying the TM backup failed. DU said it couldn't even unmount it to attempt a Repair. Disk warrior said the same thing! That's when I made a terrible mistake of changing my Startup disk to one that I think actually has 10.6 for a MBP on it! I finally managed a PRAM/VRAM reset to get back to the default internal drive. Now DW says it doesn't have room for the directory rebuild. wallbash.gif DU is working away claiming it will take another 35 minutes... A least that's down for 37!!! rolleyes.gif
