Since I have to clean anyway
« on: July 13, 2003, 09:26:34 PM »
After the remodel, I must disassemble and eradicate dust bunnies  sad.gif   Seems like it would be a good time to upgrade the drive.  iMac 333/384

Sugestions as to size and brand?  I'm starting to accumulate lots of digital images, so, while it's only 1/2 full, the HD is "feeling" small.

And I just hate to throw anything away....so what can I do with the 6G in the iMac now?  Enclosure and use as an external?  USB or Firewire?

And while I'm in there, I'm changing the PRAM battery, it is a 99 model, I bought it the week the 350s came out, 10/5/99.

Do not fear your enemies.  The worse they can do is kill you.  Do not fear friends.  At worst, they may betray you.
Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.

Jennie. I'd look for one of the cheaper, smaller drives if I was you. smile.gif

If you've been getting by with 6 Gigs, 40-60 will be plenty big.

Something like this.

IBM/Hitachi 60GB EIDE 7200 rpm for $63

http://dealmac.com/articles/53241.html

You might do better if you want to fool with Rebates.

http://dealmac.com/sections/storage.html

Donate that 6 gigs to someone who can use it on an old machine. smile.gif

I just put a 40GB WD in my iMac, works smoothly.
It's a 7200 rpm drive, and no heat issues.
I'm glad i upgraded smile.gif

I have a Maxtor 40 GB hard drive in my 333 iMac. Works great!

***** WARNING *****

When you put a bigger hard disk in any tray loading iMac, you absolutely MUST partition the drive. The first partition MUST be less than or equal to 8GB in size, and your operating system MUST be on that first partition.

The boot ROMs in a tray-loading iMac can only find the operating system if it is in the first physical 8GB of hard disk space. If your operating system is not located in the first physical 8GB of space, your computer will not boot.

Yeah, Bill has a good memory   wink.gif

I put a 30GB 7200rpm Maxtor in my 333 quite a while ago.  It seemed huge at the time.

Tacit is 100% correct about partitioning and making sure the OS is within the first 8GB.  If you don't do this, it will not boot.

One further note - most hard drives these days only have one year warranties. If you want a three year warranty (which until recently was standard with all drives...) try the Western Digital Special Editions. I am using one now (120 GB) as my primary drive and it is fast and quiet. Has an 8GB cache too. There is a 40GB version - cheapest I could find right now is about $70 (dealtime and pricewatch)

DealMac lists the Maxtor 120 GB Special Edition for $79 which is a real deal, but darned if I can find the rebates they seem to think apply. I've only found 2 - one for $30 and one for $20, and last time I checked $149-$50=$99, not $79.

It also only has the 1 year warranty.

Western Digital might be following suit with the warranty bit soon.
Hope not.!.
Like Paddy, I went the same route with a 120 and an 80gig.

I've noticed WD now packages their drives in a new shinny designed box.
Why? Seems like the packing would cost more in the production department .?.

Western Digital HAS followed everyone on the one year warranty bit - for all their "regular" drives. The Special Editions are the only ones with 3 year warranties, and since they cost more, I would expect/hope that they keep the three year warranty on them. Maxtor also has some high-end drives (DiamondMax Plus with 8GB cache and over 120GB in size - though even then there are caveats) with three year warranties.

IBM/Hitachi warranty information

I'm finding warranty information increasingly difficult to find on the websites - most of them do NOT list the warranty with the product specs/listing, which I find ridiculous.

I'm not sure why all the manufacturers have gone to 1 year warranties on all their "regular" drives, other than as a means of saving money, but I don't find that it inspires confidence in the quality of the drives, and quite frankly makes one wonder if in fact the quality has declined!!! ohmy.gif

So this http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm...Item=IBM07N9212 at OWC might not be such a bad deal for the additional $13,00 with the 2 year OWC warranty?  ($5.50± shipping)

Jennie, some more info:

http://www6.tomshardware.com/storage/20021122/

Seems that the thinking is that the 75GXP failure problems have been overcome (I have one of those drives and it's still chugging along at 3 years, 3 weeks...shhhh...touch wood etc. etc.) so that's probably not a bad deal at OWC. Generally $1/GB or slightly less is a good deal these days.

Here's another one to consider:

WD 40GB from Circuit City - $49 after $30 rebate
