Any solutions I've found involve Terminal. I never go there. 😬

Haven't tried that in Mavericks. I won't be at my Mac until tomorrow afternoon and I'll give it a try. I suspect you'll have to be logged in as an administrator, however. And Apple may have decided to block that function on their apps. Perhaps someone will have an answer by tomorrow. In the meantime try searching the interweb for something like "change icon images in Mavericks" or use "10.9" instead of "Mavericks." wink.gif

What a process, this took me all day long to do this transfer, but I think its done. THe app store with my Apple ID was problematic, as I forgot my log in name.
But got that running now, and there is a firmware update, UGH, but it has to be done. Reinstall all my PS and PSE stuff too,, arghhhhh.
And many of my third party apps have to be updated and their passwords and licence stuff put in. Egads what an ordeal!
But its almost done,,,,,,,
This icon thing is stupid, I cant imagine that they would take that ability out, as most of us want to customize our desktops and our icons.
Thats a Mac thing and if they take that away, its dumb of Apple.

Anyway our dinner will be toast if I ignore it any longer,,,,,
back later,,,,,

Still didn't start using a password, app info, personal info manager?! Even when you knew you'd be transferring all that to a new machine?!! Might be a good idea to do that before worrying about making icon changes? Thinking.gif yes.gif

Everything was just fine, except for this icon problem. No problem with passwords after I got the Apple ID one reset. Ambrosia problem is being worked on for SnapzPro, its there, they just have to retrieve it for me.

The other things you mention were OK.

But I do NOT want a password to just use the computers, tho everything else like the software, banking stuff, and many more, require them. But I dont want to have to log into my own computers every time I use them.

Everything seems to be working fine now.

I will have to re-install some of my Adobe stuff, I knew that, and have the DVDs ready to do it. And I de-authorized most of them on the computer my grandson will have tomorrow morning, and will have to go thru that re-authorizing process tomorrow. Gee, I do have a lot of Adobe stuff!

The only one I cant find the serial number for is Fireworks, and I bought that one way back when we had the academic discount, which went away when my husband retired. BUt we cannot re-activate that one for some odd reason.

I sure learned a lot today!
Thanks again,
Jane

There are only two passwords not kept in a password manager. The one you should be using for your Mac, seriously. And the one to access your password manager. They both keep anyone else from accessing anything on your Mac and anything else that needs a password. Only my wife knows my Mac password. And we both have the same password for 1Password. So, if anyone besides her steals my Mac, they will have a wee bit of trouble accessing my other passwords. On e in the possession of your machine, most thieves with a little Mac knowledge will be able to get it started. But you may be able to locate it if you have Find My Mac enabled.

Not using a password on your Mac is simply a asking for trouble, especially if there are youngins around. They may not have evil I intensions, but they can accidentally do things you regret! laugh.gif

I really despise passwords, but I do have to think this over. The kids have not created any problems so far, and we live in an extremely low crime area. Might put in a big password to open the Mac, but would I have to type the damn thing in every time I wanted to use the computers? If so, forget it. If not, yes, I would do it.

I'm not using 10.9, so can only point you to tips from others without knowing if they'll actually work ...,,,... anyhow I found this thread about icons at the Apple support forum:

Oh, That looks like the problem, but I will have to do it tomorrow, my eyes have had it for tonight.
Thanks for the rescue, its rather odd that they would mess this great thing up for a new OS?

Yep, that the way I've always done it; find an icon, not just an image, that you like. Then it's the standard copy and paste.

BTW, if you don't want a password when you log in, you don't have to use one. It's your decision, as are all the other practices you use. Most people even allow HTML display in their emails! laughhard.gif

Jane, you can't copy the picture FROM the Get Info Preview - you have to copy it from either the Finder or Preview or Photoshop.

Click on the image you want to use in the Finder (or in a photo app), then COPY it, then PASTE it on the little icon in the upper left corner of the Get Info window. That works - I just changed a bunch of my icons, which I'd actually not bothered doing in eons - so long in fact, that I had completely forgotten how to do it and had to look it up!

http://www.wikihow.com/Change-Mac-OS-X-Icons gives the basics.

Thank you all!
It used to be so easy,
http://www.techsurvivors.net/forums/index....ost&id=2920
But I will get it working to get my desktop back looking good.

A couple of other questions,
I thought all new Macs came with Mavericks, 10.9 but this one came with 10.8.5, and when I was using the app store, the error message said I had to change the apps to work with an earlier version of OS?  Or something like that.  Im assuming I need to download 10.9 and install that, then update all my apps?

Snapz Pro isnt accepting my code, said its invalid, but Ive got a new code from them, but it wont work either, so Ambrosia said they would get back to me later. I did pay about $30 for it a few years ago. Its nice.( The hot keys have changed though)

More questions, but our grandson will be here shortly, so I better get the birthday stuff ready.

Thanks again, this sure is fun getting a new machine!  Got the printer working this morning too, so I could print out the birthday stuff.
Edit, added the picture showing the OS difference.

Well, it worked for Apple icons like Macintosh HD and Time Machine. But I couldn't get it to take with the Western Digital drive that I've got named Super Duper. 2 out of 3 ain't bad!
Jane -
My brand new Mini also came loaded with 10.8. I'm sure that it has to do with production dates. Our machines likely were already made and sitting on a shelf somewhere when Mavericks was introduced. I didn't want the hassle of learning my way around one OS only to upgrade a couple of days later. So I got the Mini up and running and immediately went to Mavericks. I've already made a couple of nice envelope templates in Pages. Lots to learn about this brave new world after sticking with 10.6.8 and Appleworks for so many years.

Oh was my grandson thrilled!  He was about bouncing off the walls with glee!

I will upgrade to 10.9 as soon as I can.

Still havent figured out the icon thing, but the thing that is really bothering me now, is last night I  had them networked.
But this morning all I get is Connection Failed.  Darn, as I always have both HD on the desktop of the big Mac, so I can move stuff back and forth. This really will slow down my classwork if I cant get them networked.

Oh, woes that come with a new computer, thank goodness for you all, we will get it worked out sooner or later.
I have to reinstall PS and PSE too.
