Corel Draw with Parallels
« on: June 03, 2014, 02:43:39 PM »
Hi,

Years ago I purchased a reduced-price copy of Corel Draw (store decided to stop selling Mac products). For the price I paid it offered a lot of facilities. Took time to learn it but I achieved some satisfactory results.

Now I'm wondering whether to invest in the latest version which runs on the Intel chip.

Can anyone offer user experience?

Currently my most-used device is as follows:-

Model Name:   Mac mini
Model Identifier:   Macmini4,1
Processor Name:   Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed:   2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors:   1
Total Number Of Cores:   2
L2 Cache:   3 MB
Memory:   8 GB

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Eric, Macs run on Intel chips these days. I think you mean "Windows." wink.gif

Are you looking at the full CorelDraw X7 suite or just CorelDraw? Either way, there are some very good alternatives to Adobe these days on the Mac side, which you might want to consider, depending on your needs.

See: http://mac.appstorm.net/roundups/graphics-...creative-cloud/

I can't vouch for the vector drawing apps, but Pixelmator is terrific as a Photoshop substitute, and you can't beat the price.

Back to your original question, if you do want to pursue that route: what version of OS X are you running, and what version of Windows and Parallels? You need a minimum of Windows 7 with latest service packs (which I continue to run instead of Win 8). Parallels 9 will run on your Mac, and will run all versions of Windows. If you've got an earlier version of Parallels and Windows 8, see: http://kb.parallels.com/en/118074

Parallels Desktop 7 and earlier will not run on Mavericks...

So...unless you're running the latest of everything, it could get complicated and you need to check system requirements for each and every step.

Thanks a lot Paddy.

I'm running Snow Leopard, compatible with my PPC apps.
From what I read in MacInTouch the OS variants above SL offer little reason to change - yet.

Your link was very helpful. I downloaded GIMP. Right at the start of the download Sophos sprang to life, warning that a threat had been encountered. Luckily Sophos neutralised it for me.

GJMP seems to offer more than I am likely to use. Only occasionally do I venture into graphics territory.

Actually when playing with CorelDraw I was avoiding a duty to which I should have been attending. I ought to have been learning my lines for a role I have been awarded in a forthcoming performance of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. True, it is not one of the leading roles but, being in a scene of fast-moving comedy, it's necessary to memorise quite a lot of cue text preceding my bits.

Now it's high time to put my shoulder to the wheel.

Thanks again,

eric j
