Moving to 10.9! :O
« on: June 24, 2014, 07:28:56 PM »
So I'm seriously considering bumping up to 10.9. I have a good, bootable 10.8 backup. If I try out 10.9 for a day or so, and absolutely don't like it*, can I boot from my 10.8 backup and restore it to my HD?

*most likely because it'll break a few pieces of software that I really like

Assuming that you've used SuperDuper to make the cloned backup, then simply start up from the SuperDuper cloned drive and start up Superduper. Click on "Restore - all files" with Smart Update, making sure, of course, that you're going in the right direction! wink.gif Easy Peasy.

I like 10.9 - haven't encountered anything lately that's broken and the couple of things I was waiting for last fall were updated long ago. You can always check at Roaring Apps to see if your particular bits of software are supported or if there are any reports on how they work with 10.9.

Thanks, Paddy. A few of my favorite apps aren't listed there (old, old games). Off to give this upgrade a whirl.

Installation done. sleep1.gif TM is now doing it's first backup. Games all play, even though all info says they wouldn't. I skipped the icloud for docs and such, and hope I don't get nagged every time I restart my iMac. Now to spend a few days trying this out.

Any suggestions on the most fun thing to try? LOL

Speaking of "control", I just read about "Mission Control". Not sure what that is, but it sounds geeky. wink.gif

Just a new name for the old keyboard shortcut to display all open windows in small copies. I think I've used it twice; once to see what it did and just now to remind me. laughhard.gif   I suppose it's useful if you use the mouse/touch pad absolutely always and for 99% of time. This function seems wasting 1.4MB of disk space to accomplish nothing more than command-tab. And that action works fine on any size screen, even my wife's MBP. YMMV. Sometimes Apple just does things because they can, I guess. dntknw.gif tongue.gif

xABD, thanks for the info on Mission Control.

Good stuff:
Pages is still at 4.3.  whew.gif

Not good stuff:
  • My Online Bible app won't install. sad.gif  Works under 10.8, but won't run or install under 10.9. Drats. This could be the deal breaker. sad.gif
  • MAIL: when I open a mailbox, it opens to the first message in the list, not the most current. Frustrating, but probably not a deal breaker.
  • Discovered that I have a widget that was installed by HP, and it's "on" and I can't turn it off.
  • Also, I'm now dealing with the message thing—keep getting beeps that I've got a message.  huh.gif  Is there a way to turn this off?

[attachment=3011:message.jpg]

I'd like to dump iBooks, not yet sure about MAPS.

I'd contact the developers about the Online Bible app. There's really not a lot of basic stuff that changed from 10.8 to 10.9. Of course, if it's a 'ported' (from Windows) app, the market share may not be big enough for them to bother with even minor changes. dntknw.gif

How do you have messages in Mail sorted. I use "Date Received" 99.99371% of the time, at least on days ending in "y". But I also have Mailboxes with absolutely nothing selected when I open it. Generally, the only ones that are even selected are ones that I access daily and delete/read. There may be a setting in the prefs that affects this behavior; the only one I see id Viewing->View conversations->Show most recent message at the top. That seems to apply to conversations, of course, not single messages.

I assume a "Widget" is a Dashboard thing? There is still a Dashboard, it's an app, should be in the Applications folder. I'd suggest starting up Dashboard and see if you can find/run/stop/delete that widget. You might also want to check your Startup items list... OTOH, your "HP" may not work correctly with that thing turned OFF. And you want to be sure that all hardware has updated any required drivers for Mavericks. Thinking.gif

Not everything uses Notifications, yet. I still like Growl better, anyway. But if you'll look in your System Prefs and select Notifications, you'll see the apps that can and do use it. To completely stop Notifications for anything that uses them, select it in the "In Notification Center" and click the "None" alert style plus UN-check the "Show in Notification Center" checkbox.

Since this is coming from Messages, you might want to look at its Prefs, although I don't see any specific Notifications related choices. dntknw.gif

That's how I have messages sorted. Every time I open any mailbox, even if I select the most current email, the window adjusts and takes me to the oldest message in the mailbox.

Ohhhh ... thanks. You jogged my dead brain and I figured out how to turn off that widget. BTW, our HP only works correctly half the time, so if it quit altogether, I'd happy dance as I took it to the recycle center. wink.gif

Online Bible: http://www.onlinebible.us/maconlinebible.html
After reading this on their site:
Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion): The current version of the Online Bible (v.4.1.1) behaves properly under Mac OS X 10.8.x (Mountain Lion).
I'd hoped it would work in 10.9, especially since they have a current version for iPhone and iPad. I'm going to contact them.

BTW, what do I do to hide the upgrade for pages and such in the app store?

Hah! The $60K question. I wish there was a way - but there isn't, short of installing the update. So - I just dismiss the updates notification once a day, and when I do update anything, I never just hit "update all."

I keep hoping Apple will come to their senses and realize that some of us don't WANT to update to their crippled version of Pages etc., and allow us to selectively turn off update notifications, but alas, no sign of that yet. It's an all or nothing proposition still and since I do want to be notified of system updates and the like, I put up with the nuisance factor.

What worked for me was to let the update proceed. It does NOT delete or even update the old versions. After they download. Collect them in a folder (mainly for convenience) and archive/zip/compress each app You will probably have the originals remaining on the drive. Just delete them. And empty the Trash. They will now be hidden from view and won't open if you double-click on your current documents.

This works because now the App Store and your BOM files will match. Apple will think you're using the new versions. What they don't want to know won't hurt them. rolleyes.gif

The only downside is that you will still get notified when the apps ever get updated (so far, I think only Pages and Keynote have). All you have to do is un-archive/un-zip/un-compress the appropriate app and accept the update. Then, re-archive/re-zip/re-compress the app.

It's not perfect, but you won't get update requests 24/7. clap.gif And if and when the apps return to their former glory (and assuming we're not using a totally different, brain-implanted, thought-controlled computer by then!) you can open the apps and they'll be up-to-date! wink.gif

Just a thought about your "view" always showing the oldest message; what "View" are you using? You mentioned something about the "window adjusts". I use "Classic View" and I don't have any 'adjusting' going on when I select a message in any Mailbox. dntknw.gif

I'm using classic view. Here's screen caps that might explain. If not, then don't worry about it. I'll either learn to live with it or dump the upgrade.

This is close to how the email box used to open. All new emails were visible, even though they are at bottom of list. Also, whatever email I had previously selected would have still been selected.

[attachment=3012:Former.jpg]

This is how email boxes now open—at the oldest email and I have to scroll down. It's an extra step.

[attachment=3013:New.jpg]

Also, I had to fix these screen caps in GraphicConverter because I cannot select the TEXT tool in CS6—I get the spinning forever beach ball.  angry.gif
