Is my modem dead?
« on: July 16, 2003, 08:40:42 PM »
The day after a thunderstorm, my internet answering machine died.  I disconnected the internet answering unit and connected my computer directly to the phone jack. I then tried connecting to the internet with no luck.  The computer states it cannot detect a dial tone.  I have a phone connected to the same phone jack that works fine.  I am now connected using an old iMac I am storing for someone.  The iMac connected using the same phone jack.  Sounds like the modem is cooked doesn't it?  Strange thing is,  I ran the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with my computer and the Modem passes?  Is it possible the internal phone line connecting to the internal modem was damaged and the modem is fine?

Yes Try another phone line. Use another from any phone in the house.

possible that a line or wire outside of your house may have come lose during the storm.

Try using a phone connected to the line that you are having a problem with and see if it works.

Good Luck!    dry.gif

My orginal post may of been confusing.  I have connected a phone to the phone jack in question and I get a dial tone.  When trying to connect with my PowerMac (sorry didn't mention PowerMac in original post) it doesn't even get a dial tone.  It then alerts of no dial tone check connection.

Haven't tried connecting to another phone jack with PowerMac since the current phone jack seems to be working fine with other items.  May still try that though.

Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan, What OS are you using? If in OS X,  it may be worth while to verify that the modem is still turned on (I am hoping that it somehow got turned off).
1. Go to System Preferences/Network
2. In "Show", from the pull down menu, select "Network Port Configurations" and then ensure the "Internal Modem" is enabled. If not, enable it, sing my praises, and restart. If that does not work, well, at least the verification process was easy.

Nah. I just inserted:"The iMac connected using the same phone jack." to let the guys above know. smile.gif
I'd check your settings [as Harv indicated] Ryan first off.
Might have to reset them even.

Thanks for the advice Harv but I had already came across what you are talking about.  Oh, and yes I am running OS 10.1.5 on my PowerMac.

Seems as if my internal modem needs replace but strange the Apple Hardware test passed it.  Can I take out the internal modem and have it tested some how?

Ryan, Perhaps this will help

See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106748 and associated/referenced links.

Aside from a test bench, I know of no modem test other than trying it. Maybe them what really knows can lend some expertise. Sorry.
