What he said; this was a spur line from the main line that ran along the Kansas River.  They backed the train up and pulled up the tracks leading up to it.  We have an active steam line in nearby Baldwin, Kansas that is a nice run through the Baker Woods in the fall when the leaves turn!

Fall is coming? Nope! It's here already! eek2.gif

How 'bout some Fall colors from you Yankees! tongue.gif photo.gif scram.gif

The moss is still doing well but the miniature water lilies probably won't bloom again until next Spring! ;(

Edited to reduce the screen stretching mess! Sorry 'bout that! blush-anim-cl.gif

My sister and I often walk down an unpaved road by my Dad's house and we did so Monday. The leaves have only just begun to turn but we found other sights to interest and amuse us.

Cows always seem to be waiting for you to answer a question when they look right at you!  I remember years ago when I was a Boy Scout we hiked a trail in Western Tennessee (Shiloh Trail or NBF Trail) and there had been fairly heavy flooding a week or two previously and we were on a gravel road and there was a dead calf in a ditch and a very bereft cow nearby that I really wanted to comfort.  Still don't know how to comfort a cow!  Thinking.gif

Jim,

I got an error when I clicked on your link.

Using the following link worked fine:

I've always liked their ad campaign.

Saw one of my neighbors looking like she'd been in a train wreck last night; turns out she was on the way to a Zombie Walk:

I didn't take any pictures, I just want to get her appearance out of my head!

Jack: I can't imagine eating dinner at a table off Main Street (Massachusetts Ave) and having zombies wandering around!  I knew about it ahead of time but we were too busy to go down there!

My wife claims (and her Father confirms) that she picked cotton by hand as a child (we won't go into how long ago that might be)! Things changed rapidly in the late 1950's and now things seem to change over night! Everything is mechanized now! Won't be long till even the tractors and cotton picking machines will be driven by GPS-monitoring computers! Here is a shot of how things are done in the Arkansas Delta. Also a link to a pano of this same field.

You can also see a portion of a center-pivot irrigation system. It is not for the cotton but the field of soybeans (the darker green area). Cotton was once "King" in the south. Now there are two other crops fighting for dominance; soybeans and rice. We also see lots of corn and wheat. Agriculture is still the principle "industry" down here and it's a very fickle master! unsure.gif As you might guess, all this mechanical equipment is very expensive. Few young farmers can stay in the business unless they have access to their fathers successes. Small land owners generally rent or sell their land to those with money enough to invest in enough equipment and land to make a profit (meaning: pay for the equipment).

Took this drive a few weeks ago. This was the *main* road to and from Alsea Falls—and yes, it's a one lane two way road. tongue.gif

That road surface looks better than many we have in our towns. On the other hand it's probably a lot less busy. Did you actually meet any other vehicles? Looks like a beautiful area though.
