Apple Mac G4 Cube
« on: August 29, 2014, 12:30:25 PM »
Have acquired  450mhz Cube and it's up and running (OS 10.4.11) sadly Mail appears to be corrupt in that it's icon shows in applications but not the one one would expect this one shows a sort of compass and dividers. When I try and activate it there is no response, how do I reinstall it, I do not have any original disks albeit I have a set of Tiger disks would they be of any help.
There are other issues but I would like Mail to perform first.
This machine is at least 13 years old but boy does it have style.

That sounds like the default icon for any app that may have lost of corrupted its original one. That may be the basic problem: corruption. dntknw.gif

Your best bet might be an Updater for the OS. I'd avoid Softronics and c|net download sires; they have numerous malware/adware 'attachments' reports. This site is listed as trustworthy by WoT: <The X Lab>

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

You should be able to just install Mail from your Tiger disks. But note that you may have to update it depending on the version of your disks.

These links should help.

Krissel, I take your point regarding Tiger, the problem that what arises is the HDD is partitioned and the main partition 125gb is not large enough to follow though Tiiger's intentions.
The remaining partition 108gb I have been trying to erase but Disk utility keeps bringing up the same error message "secure disk erase failed followed by could not unmount disk.
If I look at the main volume and the option to change from two partitions  to one partition will it erase all the existing  OS?
wish I had the ability to be more explicit.
George

You should be able to insert the Tiger disk and when the window opens showing the Install Mac OS X icon, scroll the window until you see the Optional installs.mpkg.  Doube click that, then click on the box next to Applications, then click on only Mail.  It should then only install Mail and nothing else. Graphics that show the steps are in the first link in my previous post.

If that doesn't do the trick you could always use Pacifist but I don't know if they have a free trial.

As to repartitioning, yes, just changing from two to one partition via that command will erase all data. But there is a way to eliminate one partition, then resize the other (first partition) to add the space from the second partition. Eliminating the first creates a problem whereby you need to copy the data to another source, then reformat and copy the data back.
Here is the way to eliminate the second partition and add space to the first :

It can also be done by Terminal though I doubt you want to go that route.

But if you follow the first path with just installing Mail from the Optionals package, it won't need a lot of space, just what Mail takes up.

Krissel, optional installs did the trick, many thanks indeed. There are other less important issues but they can wait.
