Google Safebrowsing
« on: September 09, 2014, 09:22:10 AM »
How do I eliminate Expunge Delete CastOff GetRidOf Toss

Google Safebrowsing in both firefox and Safari ?

It never goes away . . . . . .

I can't find it in my list of add-ons in either ff or Safari.

And Little Snitch keeps bugging me to hook up.

???????

Thanks,

Jack

Um - I don't know why you'd want to get rid of it, as I've not seen it do anything other than warn of sites infected with malware, which you don't want to go to. However, if you want to disable it: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/922449

What exactly are you seeing that is so intrusive? I'm wondering if there is actually something else going on here, Jack. Perhaps explain a bit more and/or post some screen shots? I've ONLY gotten a warning when I've gone to a site (usually as a bit of research into some malware issue or other, or spam issue) that IS infected. And that's pretty darn rare. Otherwise, nothing intrusive at all.

And do you mean Safe Browsing or do you actually mean "Safe Search" - they're two entirely different things. The first protects you from malware infected sites, the second from images and search results that Google has identified as explicit or "not safe for work" (NSFW). Apparently, in the US (and Canada from what I can tell) "moderate safe search" is on by default and cannot be disabled. Lots of complaining about that...http://www.zdnet.com/google-com-now-censors-explicit-content-from-image-searches-7000008705/

Do you have Little Snitch installed? I don't use it, so don't know what its normal behaviour looks like, but my understanding is that it is constantly reporting on inbound and outbound traffic.

Yes, it's Safebrowsing, and it is Little Snitch that I am referring too.

Google.com cookies are present when permitting safe browsing.

Am I just paranoid? I don't trust Google with their history of tracking.

Jack, unless you want to use another search engine, you're pretty much stuck with at least some Google tracking, whether you have Safe Browsing on or off. Other search engines usually track you too - though DuckduckGo doesn't. Other search engines are generally not quite as good as Google in my experience, so you have to choose.

Me? Google can track me all it wants - I've got ads turned off, so nothing they try to do to lure me into buying stuff from their advertisers will work and they can tailor stuff to my interests (or their interpretation of my interests) and it won't do them a bit of good as I never see it.

There are bigger things in this world to worry about than whether Google is gleaning tidbits of information about me or not. wink.gif

I'm still not sure what the issue is with Little Snitch as you've not really described what's bothering you about it.

I don't use FF, not even Chrome, anymore. wink.gif Only change browsers when the one I'm using gets too insecure or irritates me too much. laughhard.gif I don't even know there was a "Safe Browsing" option with Google. But you should be able to find out any means of controlling it by... get ready... Googling the question! Maybe even DuckDuckGo would give you some useful results on that. smile.gif

I've tried Little Snitch several times and always end up trashing it. It's well named, I think. Nobody likes a snitch! 8) I always end up irritated with it's seemingly constant notifications that I'm using the we. "Yes, I'm aware of that. Perhaps you didn't notice I'm using a browser?" wallbash.gif rolleyes.gif laugh.gif
