TomTom Home + OSX = not good
« on: October 07, 2014, 06:00:17 PM »
Been trying to update maps and back up my TomTom XL IQ. Let it sit here to to it's thing for literally 8 hours and it seems to stall about 2/3 of the way through.
Came home and tried to simply update the maps without backing up. Same thing. And even force quitting does not happen immediately. Is there a newer, more Mac friendly version that I'm not aware of or should I just give this thing away to someone in the PC world and start with a more Mac friendly GPS?

Do you subscribe to map update service? I do, but I believe you can buy updates one at a time.

I have a different model TomTom, but have had similar experiences. I'm sure it's due to limited storage in my device.

Here's what works for me:
1. Do only a backup to my computer's hard drive, without the map update.
2. Delete map from my device. (Scary, but it frees up space on my device.)
3. Do a map update.

Works every time (so far).

I have a Tom-Tom One and am running 10.7.5 on my iMac.
I do NOT do map updating, only the available corrections etc. available at the great price of Free.. Also try to keep TomTom Home uptodatest as best I can... So far I've not had any problems getting updates and applying them.
Have noticed that it does take some time got the device to 'acquire' a satellite connection, but once that happens everything seems good to go... Haven't gotten me lost yet.

I've read of several complaints of this very same issue over both Mac & PC platforms. I just now unplugged it after having tried to update the maps. It sat here at least 9 hours and was only about half complete.
The device has always been like this for the 3 or 4 years I've had it. I'm done with it and will switch to Garmin. Mapquest has a feature where you can plan a route and download it to a Garmin so I think I'll go that way.

Our Garmin has been great. It's not all that new anymore and it's not the fancy one with the traffic updates, but it works and updates just fine. We did buy the lifetime updates for it.

Granted...I now find myself using my iPhone for any shorter trips/uncomplicated trips, where I simply have to figure out how to get from here to there or see what the traffic is like on the way. The Garmin gets used more on long trips, where I don't want to use up all my data using the phone's GPS.

I actually used the Mapquest app on the iPhone 5 today. It guided me very well through Pennsylvania on my 6 1/2 hour trip from home today. I plugged the cord from the car stereo's auxiliary jack into the headphone jack of the phone and heard directions loud & clear through the car stereo.
A quick search turned up copious complaints about the extreme lack of speed with TomTom updates and the company's seeming lack of concern for their customers.

Google Maps for iOS and yes, even the originally lame Maps from Apple are also pretty good, I find. (Mapquest led me astray a couple of times in MA, so I haven't used it in a long time. wink.gif )

TomTom has taken me on some very indirect (to be diplomatic) routes also. Couple that with literally waiting a day or more to update the thing and it's curtains for my relationship with TT.

Smoke signals were tough to read on windy days too.

A very belated plus-one here for Garmin. We've had ours - Garmin Nuvi 1300 - for around six years. The first one bricked at the first update (replaced by the retailer with no problem) but this one has served us well.

Well, I like the Garmin much more, but it's no ball of fire to update either. Updates download to the computer quickly, but stall when loading into the unit. It moves fairly quickly, then when it gets to a stage where 2 items and 11 minutes are supposedly left, it stays there for hours.
I just quit Garmin Express, eject the device, unplug and use it anyway. Just took a trip 6 hours away from home and back with no issues. If I tried that with TomTom, there would be no information on the device to work with. Here's the scripted reply I got from Garmin:
Garmin Express connects to the Internet to download software and map updates for GPS devices. Internet connectivity and network connection issues can cause problems in Garmin Express. This can manifest as:

"There was a problem downloading the update" error messages
No visible progress over time
Progress periodically reverting to an earlier value
If this occurs:

Ensure that the Internet connection meets the system requirements for Garmin Express. A high-speed Internet connection is required. Garmin Express is not intended to be used with mobile broadband (such as MiFi, AirCard, or cell phone tethering), satellite, or dial-up Internet connections.
If applicable, disable any VPN (Virtual Private Network) or proxy that is in use. If this is not possible, use a different computer and/or network connection.
Disable any third-party firewall in use, or else add an exception for Garmin Express. It is not necessary to disable the built-in firewalls in Windows or Mac OS X.
If using WiFi, disable WiFi and connect the computer directly to the modem using an Ethernet cable.

>>

If the issue persists, adjust the computer's LAN settings:

>>

Mac OS  X:

Click the Apple icon
Click System Preferences
Click Network
Click Ethernet
Click the Advanced button
Click the Proxies tab
Select the box "Auto Proxy Discovery"
Click OK

Auto Proxy Discovery setting change did nothing. Here's the next reply when they were informed of this:
Thank you for contacting Garmin International.  I'll be more than happy to help you.  My understanding is that you start the update and it doesn't complete.  I would suggest doing ALL updates that it is suggesting, regardless of whether you think they are needed.  I would also check to make sure that you have the most current version of Garmin Express on your computer.  I've included a link that will help resolve most Garmin Express issues.

http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSu...p;kbName=garmin

If you continue to have issues please reply to this email or contact Garmin Product Support at 1-800-800-1020. Garmin Product Support is open from 8 AM to 6 PM Central Time Monday through Thursday and 8 AM to 5 PM Central Time on Friday.  Thank you.

I have the latest version of Garmin Express. When time permits I suppose the next step is to delete the device and "reassociate" it. I guess that waits for another time. No trips planned in the near future anyway.

Just buy a new car with GPS/mapping included! Or, for only slightly less, buy an iPhone. wallbash.gif scram.gif

In the interest of full disclosure I have an update. This morning a window popped onto the screen stating that an update was available for the Garmin. So I plugged the unit in, began the update process and walked away. Came back 15 or 20 minutes later and lo & behold all updates were complete!
This was a simple plug and play. I did nothing suggested by Garmin support's email and never did "disassociate" the unit and start over again as suggested. Go figure.

I think the key here is hat you "walked away"! Even though the mini doesn't have a camera, it can still hear what's going on around it! With no one around to interact with, it simply did its job. Even computers want/need some personal attention occasionally... even if it tries to be in control of the human! eek2.gif

Glad to know you got things updated, but now you have no excuse to get lost! Thinking.gif
