Naughty Netscape 7.0
« on: July 20, 2003, 08:36:00 PM »
It's a step in the right direction. 7.0 installed from the CD and I can even use mail. I have my bookmarks and saved mail, addresses, etc. But.....

On starting, I get the "Converting user profile" every time! Why didn't it just do that once? I does "take awhile" as advertised.

This session, I also got the "Network registration" window. Not gonna do that. Can I get it to leave me alone?

In previous versions, if you resize the various windows it will be that size the next time you start it up. It would even "remember" the position on the screen. Not so with 7.0 sad.gif. I want that ability back!

The promise of a "Classic Theme" was empty. "It will take effect the next time you open Netscape. Not. Won't do it.

My "personal toolbar" was transformed somewhat. It decided to lengthen the names, thus pushing several of them out of view. I shortened the names using Get Info while in "bookmark edit" mode, but the next time I start it up, the long names are back.

I haven't found any pref settings that address any of these irritants. Help!

By the way, I'm using OS 9.2.2 and I refuse to try a full download of NS 7.02 because that has failed twice before. I'd sure like to know if these problems (and there will be more) can be fixed in 7.0, or if there is a "patch" available to update it to 7.02(?). I certainly didn't see any such thing on the Netscape web site when I attempted the full download.

Oh, BTW, the reason (and for now the only reason) that I'm trying so valiantly to upgrade my Netscape is to make this site more accessible. So far, that goal has been realized.

wacko.gif I am using 7.02 on my 8600 using OS 8.6, it seems to be working fine. I did the net install and have not had any problems, I did have problems with the version 6 with the tool bars disappearing and it locking up 3 times at one instance wallbash.gif  I got the latest IE but it does not resize back if you close the program before closing the ad pages that pop up in the background. I never got a reply from MS on that problem and on the netscape 6 problem I got a automated reply and that was the end of it never heard anything back. the automated reply said I should delete the preferances and reinstall the program, I tried that but no luck, went back to Netscape 4.79 for a while until I tried the 7.02 version, so far so good wink.gif
I would wipe all referances to the browser and do a clean reinstall and see what happens from there

Gregg  NS 7. puts preferences in (OS 9.1 here) Hard Drive>Documents>Mozilla>Profiles>Default>some gibberish letters.  My folder has 46 items and folders.  Look there and see how many profiles NS has created.

The only preferences in your System Folder>Preferences are Mozilla Registry and
Mozilla Versions.

I'm trying to remember, difficult at best when one suffers from CRS, but Chris is on the right track, I had to install NS more than once to get it to stick, and it had to do with using either Netscape Profile Manager or Netscape Profile Migration (in hard drive>Applications>Netscape) to set up.

Trash the above items, do a reinstall, don't use the manager or migration.

Gregg...

On the registration window, to get it to go away hit "cancel" and then I believe "cancel" again when it prompts you and it "should" not come back again.

I'm not running NS7.x right now but have played with it a few times... generally it's always taken and converted all my NS4.76 stuff smoothly and first time, but one time I did have to uninstall all traces of NS 7.x and try again. Second time all went well.

What Jennie suggests is a good thing to try... and she knows the program a lot better than me... wink.gif

Sorry you're having so much trouble with it... myself I still use Opera 5 here with no trouble and it doesn't play with NS4.76. But unfortunately those NS4.x versions are becoming obsolete, I always have both browsers open now for pages that NS won't handle.   sad.gif

ok Jennie, db; I've printed your suggestions for later. Thanks! I might get a chance over the weekend to try them. I'm not usually the one who opens Netscape during the week. We just leave it open all day to avoid having to jump through our firewall each time. Besides, I'm too busy in the evenings taking care of house stuff.

My son (the Linux/Unix guru) hangs out socially with Netscape's biggest shot programmers.

Here are some of his ideas?
Why even use 7.0 w/9.x? Would you atempt to install a DVD player in a '54 Chevy? (He enjoys colorful metaphors!)

There is no relationship - in underlying code - between NS 4.x and 7.x None. Totally redone.

He asserts. further, that for everything <OSX, NS 4.7.9 should work just fine; for X , however, only Mozilla is what he (my son) asserts.
(Ed Note:) My experience seems a leetle different than his last idea, but I learned after he reached the age of about, oh, 15, not to question his technical prowess - - that was 31 years ago.!

Here's an idea of mine:

Save your bookmarks to your DT (via export); same with your address file. Then trash everything else with a NS label, anything, everthing. Start Fresh, via download or CD. If I was going to use NS <7.2, I would get the last iteration, not the first.

Jennie also had some good ideas, insofar as my experience might suggest.

In the end, when in doubt, methinks, hose it and start over.

Dick, I didn't have an OS compatibility problem. I was having trouble with the TS site using Netscape 4.8 so I'm not confident that 4.7.9 would be the answer.  I'd love to have NS 7.0.2 but not if it's a full download since that has failed twice. I have 7.0 on a CD now, and will work with it some more when I get a chance. Thanks for your input. smile.gif

Gregg,

I'm on OS9.2.2 with Netscape 7.02 now. No problems. I use it on OS 10.2.6 and OS9.1 too.

Why not use the SmartUpdate? That's what I always do and it works well.

From their FAQ page:
SmartDownload is currently available only for Windows 95/98/NT. Future versions will include an enhanced SmartDownload designed specifically for the Mac OS.

Now that's weird. I've used SmartDownload before also. But, that was pre-OSX. But you've used it since X, Gary?

Besides, would it be "smart" enough to know that I only want to go to 7.02 or just download 7.1 or whatever the latest version is? In other words, does SmartDownload identify my OS before commencing? 7.1 won't work with OS9.

Gregg,
the last time I used SmartUpdate was when I went from Netscape Communicator 7.0 to 7.0.1 on my beige unit. I downloaded 7.0.2 when I got my G4 this Spring and installed it on all three HDD's as I remember.
It would give you the latest version....I think. Where did you find the SmartUpdate for windows? I don't know why they would have pulled the Mac version. Thinking.gif

Gary, I followed your "SmartUpdate" Help link, and clicked on its FAQ link. The Mac question is in the lower half of the list.

@#*&%$!  CopyPaste won't work in this @#*&%$! version of Netscape either.

...see how many profiles NS has created.

Seventeen and counting! It seems to be creating one each time the program is started up. They range in size form 7.4 to 40.2MB! Thanks for the tip! This will chew up my hard drive space in no time. Am I safe in deleting all but the most recent one? I don't want to lose new e-mail messages I haven't deleted yet.

That's what you meant, right? Delete those two items?

Not to worry about losing mail at this point. It won't let me delete any! After deleting and clearing out the Trash, it all comes back the next time it's started up.

I would first look inside the most recent profile created and save the mail folder.  Trash all the profiles created by NS 7, and trash the two Mozilla preference files.  Then trash the NS application, and start over.

A though just occurred.... do you have the "Applications" and the "Documents" folders on the same hard drive (or partition) as the System folder?

When you do the reinstall, don't use Profile Manager or Profile Migration, just open as if you are a first time user, and it will import from NS 4.7x.
