Jennie, to answer your question: yes. I have not partitioned my tiny 4GB hard drive.

Question for you (or anybody who knows): After doing this over, and NS7 has converted the profile from 4.8 should I trash the 4.8 prefs so it won't look there next time? (I have copied the entire Netscape folder in Prefs to a disk every time I've tried a new install, so of course, I'd start there.) Are there things I should keep on my hard drive from the "old" 4.8 prefs?

I wish I had an answer as to why your setup keeps trying to create another profile... mine was just "done" once and automatically every time I've tried NS7.x.

In fact what bothers "me" more is that NS7.x has a tendency to mess with my NS4.76 which I still use actively as I feel no urgency to ditch it having another browser that works here and elsewhere when needed. I don't feel in a "learning curve" mood right now... wink.gif

I'm afraid you may have to ditch NS7.0 completely and altogether and start over... and I'm even more afraid my suggestion would be to download a complete and full installer of NS 7.02 given Smart Update's notorious failure rate... sad.gif

Gregg Are you, by chance, manually moving your "old" files into NS 7?  i.e. mail, bookmarks etc.

Sorry to just "post and run" on that last one... I should add too maybe that I think you might like NS7.02 better because it fixed some problems like the "copy/paste" thing you mention.

And as Jennie says it really should just kick in and do all the conversions you need for a profile all by itself on the first run...

Jennie, no, I'm not. It's doing a fine job messing things up all by itself.

I think my next step is to open NS 4.8 and see what's there. If recent e-mails are there, I can finally trash some that I don't want. Then I'll look at NS 7 again and see what I find. Next step will be to clean up the NS 7 profiles and the other suggestions.

Anybody have thoughts on trashing the NS 4.8 prefs after the NS 7 conversion?

...ok, did all that.
4.8 looked fine, everything there.
New install of 7 behaved the same. (The installation routine never asked if I wanted to use Mgr. or Migration.)
I'm done. Sticking with 4.8 until I have to bury this computer. I don't have time for this stuff.
Thanks to all who tried to help.

Sorry Gregg that things are going a bit easier... sad.gif

No, you should not have to trash 4.8 profiles or anything for 7.0 to work right.

Have you ever tried Opera if NS isn't working for you? You can get 30 days trial w/o being bothered by any ad banners and after that it's still free with the ad banners which aren't really too intrusive, you can set preferences for what you'd rather have shown to you as well.

It does work well on this board, so it would give you something to use when NS4.8 doesn't want to. NS and Opera don't mess with each other in any way...

thanx.gif very much Jennie... I'd clean forgotten about that one! Not again!... I bookmarked it now... smile.gif

That was I think one of the best Netscape back and forth discussion threads on the board...

Ok, here's my solution:
I will keep NS7 loaded, just to make my visits to TS pleasant (and productive). I will delete any new profile that is created each time. Is there anything else I should be watching for to keep NS7 in check?

I will continue to use NS 4.8 for everything else I do online. Well, except at work, where I'm forced to use Explorer -don't ask what version, couldn't begin to tell you. I only come to TS on my Mac on the weekends, if I find the time.
