Netscape 7, do you like it or not?
« on: November 14, 2002, 11:06:00 PM »
Hi all you Netscape lovers,

Please leave your remarks, likes and dislikes about NS7.

I would like to know because I just installed it on my B&W with Jaguar and found it so far really nice in certain areas and a little odd in other areas.

I like the speed, it is fast and so far stable.  I set the disk cache at 0 and set the memory cache at 8MB's.  Causing all cache to be in memory, this has seemed to help the speed in rendering pages extremely.

One dislike is when I type in a web site name in the location field I always get a search engine page with it's results.  I then would have to find and click on the link from the search engine.  In IE if I type a web page name, IE usually fills in the ".com" part of the URL when I hit enter.  Much more convenient than NS7.

Overall, I like it, but I am so used to not filling in the last part of a URL, that that will take a little getting used to.

Al:

I liked it very much - particularly the speed - and the manual that came with the CD.

However, I've gone to Mozilla 1.1 (free) which permits setting the Preferences to reject popup ads, both over/under.

As you know, Netscape is developed from Mozilla - however, in Netscape the feature to reject popups is missing.

Try Mozilla - except for the name, you'll think you're in Netscape.

Tip: Leave your Netscape on your hard drive - Mozilla will automatically pickup all your bookmarks, addresses etc. If you remove Netscape, you'll have to set up Mozilla from scratch.

I like it very much. It's my main browser.

Al,
I had the same problem with adding a an addy. Prefs->Navigator-Search using Netscape search.

I think there is another thing you have to do but I forgot. Do a search for Netscape 7. I think Dreambird had the solution. I'll try and find it to.

It also has become our browser of choice! Not only the faster page loads, but I love the tab options, I can have my pages and my wife can have her pages, the easy tab selection makes it fast and simple  ;~). :~)'  no longer have to use the drop menus to display the different windows!!!!! I still run Explorer but I seem to not use it anymore, so long Microcost, sorry Microsoft.

I love it, but have a problem with the side scrolling bar.  Once I let go of the mouse, the page continues to scroll all by itself, stopping an inch or so from where I wanted to be.  I've installed 3 separate times, and the same problem occurs.  I'm using 10.2.2.

Al...

I've managed to find the solutions to problems with the naviagtion bar in the release notes for NS7 under Known Bugs>Navigator.

Might be worth trying what it says in there for your problem... Gary's problem I think was more one of not going "anywhere" when he entered a URL... I've never had a problem, and it sure shouldn't be taking you to a search engine!

Might have a look throught those for your problem too Audone... hopefully you'll find something...

a  topic  you may want as reference.

My pet peeve is still being "locked out" when sending a message.  BUT I have found a work around somewhat.  command-shift-return sends the mail to the "Unsent Folder".  With the mail window open, go File>Send Unsent Messages you can now surf, read other mail while your messages are going out.
Do not fear your enemies.  The worse they can do is kill you.  Do not fear friends.  At worst, they may betray you.
Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.

I like Netscape 7 except for one feature -- AOL Instant Messenger.  I  can't turn it off.  I am not especially fond of chatting and when I want to do so, I'll use iChat.  At least I can turn  that off.

Great stuff here, I really like the tabbed web pages feature too.  Really beats having four browser windows open and cycling through them.

I found out that if I have previously visited a web site then NS7 will fill the URL endings, but if it is the first time requesting a web site it takes me to a search engine first, everytime.

Margie, I guess I was lucky, when I first started up NS7 yesterday, I didn't enter my information for AIM, so since then AIM has never started up.  Didn't cause I too usually use iChat now.  Infact since I am trying Jagaur more and more, I only want to use NS7 for internet browsing and web page composing.

Speaking of which, before we could delete certain packages from being installed (talkback, AIM, etc...), but now it is all bundled under one file.

Thanks for the replies, keep em coming!

I tossed NS 7 some time back because it didn't suit my email needs and that is all I was interested in.

The really only reason why I keep NS around is web composing, correct size image downloads. IE bloats image downloads. The other browsers ... don't know about or care.

Bill, I'm with you... I don't like this browser for my machine... at least for now. I am using Communicator 4.7 as my mail program, and I use Explorer (reluctantly) for those pages that don't display correctly in Communicator

I'd been using NC 4.7.9 for emailing and IE for browsing for years.  Tried NS7, thought the interface was    , that it was a whole lot faster [wanted to get away from M$] but felt it was missing some things in the messaging department.  Went back to NC4xx for a bit then tried NS7 again and have been with it ever since.  Never had any of the AIM stuff--always trash anything related to that immediately and have never had a search engine appear after typing in a URL.  Strange!!! I type 'www.xxxxxxxxxxx.com', return & it goes there, thank heavens!

Most of the features I thought were missing in the email part are actually there but show up differently in this version.  Also found some cool things that have been added in but these were discovered gradually after using the program for a while--now I'm glad I 'switched'     and like it better the longer I use it.

One other comment... I get no pop-up ads and until I read comments on this thread, I'd forgotten all about them.  I wonder if this could be the answer to that problem:  Not too long ago I dl'd Mozilla 1.1 and tried it as was suggested by one of our posters.  At that time, I went into the Prefs., in 'M 1.1', and selected not to receive pop-up ads.  Now that I'm back in NS 7.0, [cuz 'M' was missing some things] I get absolutely '0'.  That's the only logical explanation I can think of for not being bothered by them 'cause I used to get a ton in NC 4xx.

Hope something here helps someone with his/her problems--good luck!

NS 7 is fine but not as fast as IE 5.1.6  NS starts up slower then IE . It does have nice features but hangs or freezes for some reason when Java Applet loads when viewing live Video feeds. I just don't know why? IE doesn't ?   IE  4 Me

I only just downloaded Netscape 7 this morning because IE butchered downloads from a particular site I download a lot from.  I does the job on that site but otherwise remains a little odd to me.  I'll probably toy with it a little bit to see how I "really" feel.

Sunset, sorry, I should have been more clear.  In IE if I just type in a web site name, it finishes the URL for me.  Example, versiontracker, IE when hitting the return key fills in the .com part (versiontracker.com).  In NS7, if I haven't been to that sight before with it, it takes me to a search engine if I don't put in the .com part of the URL.

Really, it is not turning out to be a big problem, I am getting used to it....
