Paddy, my Mail content isn't in the old Users Containers folder but it is in that folder of my new Users account. I suppose it's no wonder my original email account isn't opening. I still didn't find "com.apple.mail" listed, only all my folders, etc. that were missing.

I didn't pay enough attention that https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1524?locale=en_CA is for version 10.7.4 or earlier. I gave my version 10.7.5 a try. It didn't download properly the first time but the second and third time it did but I got this message: "This volume does not meet the requirements for the update." Bummer!! Any suggestions?

I'm sorry, Paddy, I reread your post where you said that you don't care for Best Buy. Since they are only blocks from me and the closest Apple Store is several miles, if we haven't soon gotten to the bottom of this, I'm sure I would have been paying a visit to Best Buy.

Bottom line is that I have my email account - only short of the old mailboxes where I have "stuff" saved. Web mail does contain everything, though. I'm sure I can live with this new system user account. My daughter-in-law asked if I think it's time to buy a new computer. I'm not as long as there isn't anything seriously wrong with this one.

Something I don't think I have mentioned is that the computer has gotten quite slow in changing pages, opening apps, etc. This is much like the email having declined over a period of time. The color wheel had been hardly evident until Mail deteriorated. Is there a possible connection?

Liz, what operating system do you have installed? If you've got 10.7.5, you'd need the combo update for that. I was going by your "My Macs" section, which said you had 10.7.4. That won't work if you've got 10.7.5.

As for the slowness - how much space do you have left on your hard drive?

Are you seeing a lot of page outs in Activity Monitor (that's in the Utilities folder - start it up and have a look in the Memory section)? Inadequate RAM often causes slowness, but you can't upgrade yours any further.

Apply the correct Combo updater anyway and see if that helps things (mail and otherwise) If not, let us know.

You are so right about space left on the hard drive. There was a noticeable reduction of space when a family member sent photos to Dropbox. But that didn't put it near where it is now. For whatever reason, I now have almost no space at all left. I'm working on finding out what and where the bloat is.

It's easy to simply open a Finder window in List View (command + 2) and sort stuff by size. OTOH, you might enjoy <Daisy Disk> with it's improved display of type of files, not just sizes.

Not sure why someone putting stuff in their DropBox would affect your disk space, unless you gave them your DropBox access or you downloaded everything they 'gave' you.

Liz, how much room do you have left on your hard drive? Less than about 5GB and you'll start to see issues - everything from slowness to potential file corruption. (The old 5 or 10% free rule doesn't apply in these days of huge drives and resource-hungry operating systems and applications)

For real space-gobblers, look for video files. After that, photos. After that, music.

And putting things in Dropbox, if you're sharing that folder, will certainly not decrease the space used on your drive. The files are synced - but they're physically still there on your drive (assuming you put them there to begin with). And copying (as opposed to moving) something to your Dropbox folder takes up twice the space.

When I wrote about the HD space there was just 17.76 GB out of 159.18 GB. After some "house cleaning" I have 52.71 GB. I'm not happy with such little space when only a short time ago I had less than half the space used.

What I can't figure out is why my HD got so bloated. I did see a decrease in available space after having around 400 photos dropped into the DropBox. It hardly amounted to a drop-in-the-bucket compared to where it was this morning.

Could the two other users make that much difference? I opened "Shared files" so I would have access to everything especially in the one I will be using all the time.

BTW, is it time to completely remove the old user from the computer? I don't find anything lurking there that I can't access with shared files.

But… if that user is removed will I still have access to those "shared files"?

Liz, which version of the OS are you using now? Please look under the Apple symbol in the main menu bar in the Finder ->About this Mac and let us know.

Having an entire another version of your User folder could certainly use up a lot of space. If you're sure you don't need it, (really sure!) then it's safe to remove it.

Mail is totally useless there. Perhaps it is not beyond fixing but I have resigned myself that I'm not qualified to do the fixing. The color wheel is more active in that user folder. Folks, I get ready to remove the entire system user where the corrupted mail is then want to try one more thing. Keep in mind that Mail for the other two users has no problems.

I have re-read this entire thread and realize I have not been, methodically, following your instructions; reporting to you what I've done.

Besides getting the Combo Updater downloaded, I have followed instructions, "Remove Mail saved state" with no result.

Here is what is happening when I open Mail in this users folder:

1. Usually, clicking any Mail icon starts the spinning wheel. (Force Quit will not quit mail. Shutting down and re-booting doesn't quit Mail. To force quit I have learned to go to a browser> apple> Force Quit.)

2. Once in a while preferences has opened and I can get as far as to click Accounts. If it opens at all, it is completely blank and spinning wheel starts.

I found this page in Apple Support: Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes - Learn how to re-index a folder or an entire volume for Spotlight.
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201716. I don't know what else it might have done, but it didn't affect Mail.

I believe I have done everything I know to do to save the contents of this users folder in preparation for removing it, including having Time Machine running since May 29. What do you think, shall I go for it?

And, I do want to report that HD available storage space is 73.38 GB of 159.18. (It wasn't the only thing, but something my young grandson had downloaded made a lot of difference.)

Something is off the tracks here. "Force Quit" is not in any 'browser'. It is under the 'Apple' menu at the extreme left-hand end of every Menu Bar. It is there no matter what app(s) you might be running.

I am completely baffled by your saying "Force Quit will not quit mail." followed by saying you Force Quit by using the "browser> apple> Force Quit." I have no idea what the first mention of "Force Quit" is referring to. There is no "Force Quit" in any browser or any other app that I know of. The 'Apple' menu item is simply always there, just before the name of the application that is active (Safari, or Finder, or Mail, etc.) and then all its menu items (File, Edit, View, and then any special menus for an app).

Since you have created at least one additional user account, I am also confused by your reference to "this user" account/folders/stuff. Who is "this"? Do you mean "my"?

BTW, Paddy will be away for an indefinite time with family health concerns.

Well, you learn something every day… I have been using keyboard shortcut to "Force Quit" anytime I needed to. I think I only learned this morning that Force Quit is in the drop-down under the Apple. I told you I'm old and the older I get the less observant I get.

With the corrupted Mail [wha-cha-ma-call-it that I've been talking about all this time] open, Force Quit no longer works using the usual keyboard shortcut. I'm not sure what is normal, but in this case the curser is a spinning ball except on the the right side of the menu bar and the dock. Since I can go to a browser (or some place else) where the apple is in the menu bar I can Force Quit Mail.

Thanks for the explanations. The reason you can't use the keyboard shortcut is because the "frozen" app has first dibs on any keyboard input. Since it is "frozen", it's not passing that shortcut on to the OS, which is what brings up the Force Quit dialog. As long as your cursor is over any window of the "frozen" app, you'll see the spinning beachball. Moving the cursor (spinning beachball) to any other part of the screen not used by the "frozen" app will magically return it to the regularly scheduled pointer. At that point, you can use your keyboard shortcut. I have no idea what that 'shortcut' is (nor do I care

), since I usually end up moving the cursor to the Apple menu area, anyway.

I'm too lazy to learn a bunch of keystrokes that may only work after I've moved the cursor near the the menu I need anyway.

I'm not about to tell you to delete your (current) user account without doing some research about the consequences of that. I don't want you to end up being worse off!! I think the minimum next step is to change one of those other user accounts to an "Administrator"! I suspect they are not set up that way right now. You change their 'status' in Users & Groups, I think. My Macs are all shutdown now due to the hour, and I'll double-check the location tomorrow. Until then, Good nite Gracie!

The keyboard shortcut is Command+Option+Escape. It's been that way for as long as I can remember. But when your cursor is stuck in beachball mode you can't use it, as was mentioned.

Liz, you said you downloaded the 10.7.5 update but did you apply it? I can't find where you said you ran the updater. I'd do that and then go back to your old user account and see if it made any difference in running Mail. If not, and it may not since Mail is working elsewhere, and you are sure you have moved all data from your old account, it probably is safe to delete it.

However, with that much free space you are not in any hurry to do so. Moi, I'd go on with the new user account for a while til I'm sure there isn't anything missing that I'd left behind and everything is truly working. Yes, you now have a TM backup and can dig stuff out of there, but I never feel safe with only one backup since that also can be corrupted at any point.
