Mavericks Issues.
« on: May 27, 2015, 03:50:37 PM »
/rant:

Every time I boot into Mavericks, Little Snitch wants to connect to:
[exec]static.gc.apple.com on Port 443
[exec]service.gc.apple.com on Port 443
17.173.254.222 on Port 16384
17.173.254.222 on Port 16385
17.173.254.223 on Port 16386

Then, Mavs wants me to log into my iCloud account.

1) I don't particularly have any desire to use iCloud for anything at this particular time !
2) I don't particularly trust any of my data or info in anybody's "cloud"

I know I can get rid of the Little Snitch warnings by denying them permanently (if there is anything such as permanent in computers anymore).

But how do  I gently tell Mavericks about my feelings, and have my computer quit nagging me???

It's a pain in the behind side.

My feelings on Mavericks so far:

1) I am totally underwhelmed.
2) Using LibreOffice as a substitute for M$Office X is working ok, but not great because of a few nuances. And I sure don't like M$ newer Office versions. Please bring back Word 5.0. And Canvas 3.5.4 - yes I know Canvas is totally unrelated to M$.
3) I haven't seen anything on the real positive side yet, other than being able to use applications that require new OS. - Only Rosetta apps so far.
4) I've had trouble with Mail in Mavs, particularly with replying to  and forwarding massages.
5) I'm still looking for a good replacement for Addresssix. And I'm sure I will find many more ppc apps I will need to find replacements for.

I ain't a very happy camper, being here out of necessity, not out of desire.

I would think that after 10.7, 10.8 and 10.9, there would be more startling improvements.

Sorry I'm an old Carmudgeon, I guess I am too set in my old ways.

I still feel that Snow Leopard is the best Apple has ever had to offer - rock-solid stable, usable, and otherwise. A truly great OS !!!!!

I will say that cloning 10.6.8 to a new partition, and applying Mavericks.app to it brought over all my stuff with very little updating necessary. Most of my prefs were intact, etc. And I had no need to use Migration Assistant at all.

And I sure appreciated all the help you folks here at TS helped make the upgrade (????) as painless as possible.

But I don't need iCloud, at least not yet.

I don't have an iPhone or iPad that I need to synch with my iMac yet. And I'm not particularly thrilled with Apples version of a calendar, or other.

And I use my own versions of photo storage, schemes and manipulation.

So how do I get rid of it?  Turn it off? Or ???

/end rant

Thanks for listening.

Jack

I hear you about iCloud. Perhaps How Do I Delete An iCloud Account From My Mac? will help.

I'm sorry that you're not ecstatic about Mavericks. Since I have no experience with it, I can't express an opinion. However, I do agree that Snow Leopard was great.

For 'dismissing' iCloud, you might just 'sign out' in the System Prefs->iCloud. I'm assuming (dangerously, of course) that the pref in Mavericks is similar to what we have in Yosemite. Be sure to un-check any of the listed 'services' that can use iCloud, of course. Without having another device to sync with your Mac, there's not much use for the iCloud service, except as another place to store/backup your Contacts, Calendars, Mail, etc. dntknw.gif

I gave up on Lil Snitch years ago because of it's (to me) over sensitivity and general annoyance. YMMV, of course. laugh.gif

I have Yosemite running a weather recording/reporting software package 24/7/365. When I have to restart it for some reason, I get a request for my Apple ID password. If I click cancel/ignore/don't bother, it asks me one more time. If I actually copy (it's a very long, completely un-memorizable collection of numbers, symbols, and letters) and then paste it into the dialog, I have to do that at least a dozen times! wallbash.gif Somewhere, some place, at least a dozen different apps/services think they need that info, even after I've turned off everything I can that uses iCloud.

found the password

Turned off iCloud

HOWEVER, LS still wants to access most of the stuff from Apple, including iTunes stuff and the 17.173.254 . . . .  stuff.

And when I block them forever, LS keeps thrashing around with the exec-.... stuff a while before settling down.

LS v 3.5.3 on Mavericks

such a pain.

Maybe, xABD, like you, I ought to trash LS

I'm sure LS is valuable for many, but the increasing 'conversations' between apps and the web means an ever increasing volume of traffic that LS 'sees'. Perhaps its dev will find ways to ignore/approve certain 'conversations' to cut down on false-negative reports. dntknw.gif

Let us know how you get along with iCloud "off". I suspect you'll still have to sign IN every time you access iTunes, the Mac App Store (which is where 'Software Update' now lives), and many other things. I would recommend making sure you have your Apple ID Password stored in multiple places, also would recommend a good password manager on top of Keychain. 1Password is my favorite, but there are others, some even free. OTOH, you want this kind of app to be more than someones 'hobby'... wink.gif
