Possessed computer?
« on: June 18, 2015, 01:29:27 PM »
Hi guys,

I've got my MacBook Pro retina here running OS10.8.5. I'm sorry if I'm not giving enough info, just please ask. I've not been well and to say I'm confused would be an understatement! I'm ready to just put the computer away... sad.gif

I have NO idea what's wrong here and it's hard to explain because weird things are happening and none of it makes sense. A lot of my custom icons have been blown out, on a "get info" the thing is searching for some non-existent entity down in the area where it says who may do what. There's a blank icon with a ? mark that sayings "fetching".

In short it's all acting like it has some major virus. I have no idea what to do! Restore from Time Machine a couple days back?

That's just an outline, I hope I haven't confused everyone as much as I am... sad.gif I need help with this thing!

Thanks to all for any ideas.

Oh... also it was looking for some "Library" folder in my home directory... from what I can tell looking around Time Machine there hasn't been one there since March of this year???
Also perhaps I should add that a lot of custom icons that ARE left are blurry.

Permissions problems?  I use ONYX to routinely fix such things; others don't!  It's free but you have to convince your operating system to allow you to download it!

Anyone else?

I've got a copy of it but find it inconvenient to run since it insists one have a password for their computer, I've never used on so I have to go set one, run ONYX and then remove the password again.

I'm not even sure which one to use if I decide to restore from Time Machine because in Finder, everything looks wrong! I don't know what caused this... to me it happened out of the blue. I've not tried the repair permissions in Disk Utility though.

Which version of ONYX is the link to? It has to be OK for 10.8.5

BTW.... there's no version of Disk Warrior one can boot from yet is there? That's good usually for fixing custom icons etc.

Many apps that deal with usually hidden parts of the OS will ask you for your password. It's the same password you use to log into your Mac at Start up. There is nothing to "...then remove the password" from, it's actually the OS asking for the password, anyway.

I'm not at my Mac right now, but the Onyx site should show you which version works with which OS. Time Machine has the same OS as the one you are using. We need a bit more info, however, before you start grabbing stuff from Time Machine and you may not even need to.

Choose the correct version of OnyX here.

Jim, that's what I mean, I've never used a password... I just hit OK when it asks. I've always done it that way with no problem. So when ONYX insisted on one... I set one to run that and then remove it.

I don't really need a password here as no one else uses the machine unless my sis comes to visit and she's OK to. Disk Utility did nothing, I just tried to repair permissions... it did a bunch with iTunes and not much else.

Anyway here's a screenshot of the the sort of thing I'm seeing:

You really should have a password, can't think of any reason not to, but it's your Mac...

OK, when/if you select "fetching" is the 'minus' button available?

If not, it looks like someone created a user by that name. I would say something about having a password might have prevented that... but I won't. tongue.gif Can you get us a screen shot of your "Users & Groups" prefs?

I'm still out-of-town, can somebody do a search for this behavior/problem?

No one uses the machine, except my sister when she visits... don't think she did anything like that. And yes I can delete the "fetching" but it takes a few tries at it.

I'm afraid to try restoring this thing from time machine even because things like... all the stuff that was in Library/Application Support is missing ever since the Library folder in my home directory disappeared???

I'd have to restore way back to March to even get it back.... or should I try just restoring that folder alone??? I don't know... never been so confused!

My sister last visited in November so I don't think she did anything...

Where the &%(# is the Library folder in my home directory? It has everything in it... and after March it just disappeared.
Just "gone" with everything in it, at least on Time Machine. On my drive it's all there "I think" in the main Library.

That is perfectly normal. Think about like this. You have a drawer with some folders in it. On each folder, you have the name of the folder and the name of the drawer on it. You remove the folder and forget about it for some time. That folder is still full of whatever you had in it. But if you open the drawer, you will not see that folder in it.

When you open your user Library in Finder and then navigate backwards to your "DK" display, you still have the Library folder open (assuming you are in List or Column view. You may just have that window too narrow to see what's in the Library which should be to the right of your "DK" list/column.

How about a screen shot of the Finder view that shows your user Library to be missing? smile.gif Remembrr, a picture is worth 1024 words! laugh.gif

OK... actually it is there somewhere... if I try to create another folder named Library it says the name is taken. But one cannot see it... I don't think I removed it, but:
This is everything in my home directory that I can see.

Please, please, please don't be upset by "what" is in my home directory... I just want to get to the bottom of this and didn't think hiding anything would serve any purpose to that end... please...  tears.gif
I don't know what to do with the thing!

Here's a "Grab" of the last time I saw it there, in March on Time Machine:
Do I restore it from there or?

Do you suppose Time Machine gets the permissions right? ... or is that asking too much. I just turned Time Machine off for now... no point in copying one corrupt system after another.
