El Capitan features
« on: October 04, 2015, 05:10:35 PM »
As well as document the missing/changed things in El Capitan and work-arounds, it might be helpful to list some of the new and interesting - and hidden features. I'll start this off with some good links, but if you discover things on your own, chime in!

http://www.macrumors.com/roundup/os-x-10-11/

I'm particularly looking forward to the split screen feature - it will be very, very useful when I'm updating websites from Word docs etc.!!

http://www.gottabemobile.com/2015/10/03/hi...pitan-features/

And of course, the best review/rundown of all, from Ars Technica:

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/09/os-x-...echnica-review/

Also looking forward to the Safari responsive design mode, which will be useful in website development. smile.gif

One little thing that I suspect that they haven't changed, but really wish they WOULD change is Mail's nuisance insistence on putting my email accounts in alphabetical order and with iCloud first (even though it's not alphabetically first) every time I change something in Mail's preferences. I then have to re-order them all - with my most used ones first, which sticks until I change something in the Mail preferences. Grrrr. angry.gif

Not sure if it's listed in any of those articles Paddy links too as I'm too lazy to read them all to find out (har har), but I'm delighted that Safari now allows me to open a set of bookmarks and use Open In New Tabs, and no longer closes the tab I'm currently using. See my screen cap to make this clearer.

Also like the pinned tab feature in Safari.

The one thing that I didn't like (and I discovered then when I upgraded my MacBookPro yesterday) was the auto opening of all these Apple applications, which included Mail. Since I don't use Mail, I had to deal with "account not found", "incorrect password", and other alerts until I could finally get to the QUIT menu. That was annoying.

The Pin Tab feature doesn't work in Yosemite, only in El Capitán.  wallbash.gif

See this FTM thread.

No El Capitan here, yet, but the Split Screen function looks interesting. In the ongoing 'battle' between 'fixing missing functions' I decided to post here about yet another minor problem you may run in to if you have multiple monitors and try the Split Screen function.
<MacIssues October 4, 2015>

Would be great to have some input from anyone who has used this function, also.

As with any OS upgrade, we should try to determine if we have any apps that won't run after the update. The previously linked Roaring Apps site will help a bit, but it may best to contact the developer's site for especially critical updates, if they haven't notified you by now.

I just read a report that states that the way El Capitan handles incompatible apps is similar to how Yosemite did it with some added capabilities and storage sites.
If the new OS determines the app is incompatible, it will still be in your "Applications" directory but its icon will have the international 'do not enter' (circle with a diagonal line) on it. This also means it should not run even if you try to force it to open.
If it finds plugins/terminal commands or scripts/minor code pieces that are incompatible, it may leave the rest of the app looking like it will be normal. However, those missing pieces may not cause any problems until days/weeks/months after you use that app. You will probably need to do a little searching of your root drive to determine if this has happened. All you need do is open your root drive (often labeled "Macintosh HD") and look for any folders labeled "Disabled Software". Just another reason to double-check with the developer before upgrading the OS.
Lastly, the new Security Integrity Protection function will also look for any code that does not comply with it's rules. Its path is a little lengthy: Macintosh HD (or whatever you might have changed the name to)/Library/SystemMigration/History/Migration-UUID/QuarantineRoot. Most of us will probably never see ing thing here unless you do some kind of app development or use a lot of Terminal/Unix 'tricks'.
The whole point is to know before you jump out of the aircraft that you have a good chute! laughhard.gif Check with any dev that hasn't already told you that their app(s) are compatible with El Capitan . OTOH, if you notice apps missing from your Dock or Applications folder or they don't do what you expected, try looking in the two places mentioned before buying a Windows machine out of despair or other  rash actions! eek2.gif

BTW, we paranoid types would greatly appreciate a posting from you if you come across any problems that might cause any of the above. Please. Help your fellow TSer, even if you're usually only a 'lurker'. wink.gif

And to make a point that has been made many times, MAKE A COMPLETE BACKUP BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO UPGRADE.

Default Folder X does not work in 10.11 (El Capitan to those who like the names). However, he is working on version 5 which will work. There is a work around, but I don't recommend it for the casual user. You can read about it all here:

Am I the only one with complaints? laugh.gif Well, here's my latest.

I. Can't. Change. Finder. Icons.

Right now I’m stuck with a pretty flower as the icon for my hd. I'd sure love to make it something fall, but it's apparently not easy to change icons any longer. I did find a solution, which just totally thrills me.  rolleyes.gif

Okay, I used that solution and changed my drive icon. What a load of trouble. I understand the point of SIP, but I’m not a happy camper about all of this.  dry.gif

Why, oh why do you feel the need to modify what Apple/Ive has provided you? I can't image a valid reason... just asking for trouble, if you ask me... which, of course, you didn't... :laugh hard:

I guess I don't understand the problem because I don't use either Finder or the Dock, at least intentionally. If you are saying that Pathfinder won't work with EC, then my "upgrade" will be a very long time coming. wink.gif

I did the deed today, still perusing.  Went from "Mavericks" to EC so no experience with Yosemite. Ordered more memory for SWMBO's MBP, should give me a bit of time with EC before  upgrading hers.

Found another blip:

If you right click on TextEdit in the dock (yeah, I know that's old time stuff, but I like it), anyhow, up pops the recent items list HOWEVER this list is not updating and doesn't agree with the File / Open Recent menu. See my screen caps below. These used to agree, and it's a bit frustrating that they no longer do, especially since Default Folder X doesn't work at the moment.

From the dock:

From File/Open Recent:

I think I've found a "fix" in Yosemite:
Your milage may very...

Looks like things are sorted by date/time. Apparently, the "time" is based on the closest screen edge?! tease.gif wallbash.gif
