Apparently, a lot of people are having trouble with El Capitan and the new LR 6.2 update playing "nicely" together.  How are you doing?  And how 'bout you, Tacit?  I'm curious and in no hurry to move on from Mavericks, because it's working wonderfully for me, as I'm trying to get all my stuff moved over from Aperture.  LR, as I've found, is a better program for massaging images, but it's certainly not as intuitive, and I'm still having trouble handling the import feature; I wind up with dozens of sub-folders, that I have to click through to find what I'm looking for, but it's slowly coming more into focus (no pun intended!).

Yikes. No - I wasn't aware of those issues, but I've not upgraded to LR 6 either. I have been too busy, between work and rebuilding our house in Newcastle (former summer cottage, becoming our year-round home as of July 2016). Haven't updated to El Cap either - on any machines. Same reasons.

That said, I was intending to upgrade sooner or later, since the performance boost with LR 6 is apparently considerable, and since I have a shiny new 5K iMac, it would be nice to actually SEE that speed. However, I will now hold off. From what I've read, LR5 is fine with El Capitan. I'm used to its lack of speed. wink.gif As for Photoshop, I'm using CS6, and it's also apparently fine with El Cap. I flat out refuse to fork over large sums of $$$ to Adobe for Creative Cloud. Apparently, this may becoming a problem for Adobe as their profits have dropped 46% in the last year. http://www.alphr.com/news/390835/dark-clou...its-slide-by-46 Resistance maybe isn't so futile in this case? Time will tell.

Well, I did spring for LR6, when the upgrade was first made available (although I really had to look hard through the web site to find it; apparently they weren't very enthused about those of us who didn't wish to spring for the monthly "subscription" fee!  I've had no trouble, at all, with it, but I'm using Mavericks, so. . .  

Congrats on your new abode; sounds delightful, and it sounds as if you've enjoyed the "luxury" of not having to live in it at the same time you're working on it.  I envy you that!  biggrin.gif

I don't know what Adobe's current situation is, Paddy, but that article dates from Sept. 2014.

At present, Adobe is losing a lot of accounts, as more and more people are availing themselves of other programs; at least that's what the Mac Observer reports, as well as DP Preview.  Lots of upset photographers out here, although I'm happy with LR6.0 and Yosemite!

I just went back and looked at it again - the thing is, Google says "6 days ago" on the page summary (someone else on another site linked to it too).

At any rate, Adobe's profits have dropped mightily from 2012, although there has been steady growth in the last three quarters.

More competitors offering perpetual licensing are appearing though - there are several worthwhile Photoshop competitors out there already. Nothing to knock Lightroom off its pedestal quite yet, nor InDesign, but that's not to say someone isn't hard at work on that somewhere. wink.gif

Most of us can't afford/don't need the expensive hardware and software available to professionally calibrate our monitors. Heck, some of us get along with just the brightness control! blush-anim-cl.gif However, Apple has always(?) provided a bit more than basic calibration methods in the "Displays" System Prefs. It appears, from a recent MacIssues blog, that this "expert" calibration function has been hidden in El Capitan . It's still there, still in the same System Pref, but it now requires using the option key to make it available. I can't test this yet, still waiting on 10.11.1... at least! wink.gif

I wonder if there is a list of functions available that require the option key? They are often not obvious and many never realize they are even available... Thinking.gif

For those who want to know, here's the link to the article that Jim mentioned: How to access Expert Mode when calibrating your Displays in El Capitan

I used to use Expert Mode to calibrate my display (in previous OS incarnations) but was never satisfied with how my prints turned out. The colors were significantly different from the display colors. (Caveat: I'm very fussy about my photography.) I have been pleased with X-Rite hardware and software, however. I started out with Eye-One Match but had to ditch it after upgrading to Yosemite (it doesn't work with any OS later than Snow Leopard). Currently, I use i1 Profiler. The calibration process takes less than 5 minutes and I'm very pleased with the results.

If you are serious about photography and have some cash, I highly recommend it. A cheaper solution is Color Munki, also by X-Rite. I have found that X-Rite's tech support and phone service are excellent.

I stil use the Mark-1 Eyeball method. Sounds different than the Eye-One thing. Maybe they will come up with an Eye-Two (3-D) version. Groaner.gif

I found the solution to this minor issue: Quit TextEdit and remove from dock. Reopen and the version in the dock will now match up with the file menu version. So I'm guessing this was a pref issue with the dock.

If you right click on TextEdit in the dock (yeah, I know that's old time stuff, but I like it), anyhow, up pops the recent items list HOWEVER this list is not updating and doesn't agree with the File / Open Recent menu. See my screen caps below. These used to agree, and it's a bit frustrating that they no longer do, especially since Default Folder X doesn't work at the moment.

Not sure this is a "feature", but the Notification Center has now started "nagging" the slow-to-upgrade" sluggards (You cannot hide; Apple knows who you are! yes.gif ). rolleyes.gif Careful with your clicking; there is no "Cancel", of course, but if you miss the "Later" button, you'll get to enjoy watching the upgrade... OK, you'll hopefully get a chance to back out of that. Hopefully you'll just get to see the Mac App Store open and the usual "Upgrade/Update" button will still need to be clicked.
