In AppleWorks 6.2.4 how do I get the font menu to show fonts in their true style? Never was a problem with OS9 and Claris, but I can't figure out how to do it in OS 10.2.6. Help would be appreciated.

Thanks all, but still a problem.

RHPconsult's solution looks easiest, but when I go to AW 6.2.4.prefs > general I get a blank window — no mention of Font Menu in Actual Fonts .

Pendragon's thread wasn't too good.

The solution via Text Edit didn't work, 'cos there was no tab for Glyph Catalog.

Bil207's freeware app ILoveFonts threw up a "URL not found" window

kps's method works OK if you want to see font designs in Text Edit

BUT what I'm looking for is something that will show font designs in the font menu when working on a doc in AW.

It used to be simple. Why oh why is OS10 so darned complicated?

Sorry, What I should have said was:

1. Open TextEdit
2. Go to the Menu Bar Format/Font/Show Fonts
3. From drop down menu at the bottom of the screen that says "Extras..." select "Show Characters".
4. Now, select the tab at the top that says "Glyph Catalog".
5. At the bottom of this screen are the pull down menus that allow both font and style selection.

Bellbram, did you get the problem solved? I just followed Flash's suggestion and downloaded the update (I was at 6.2.4 also, and for some unknown reason Software Update never kicked in...despite Apple's "next time use Software Update" after I manually downloaded the 6.2.7 update!!!!)

Turns out, the font display option was in 6.2.4 too - (I have another drive with 6.2.4 installed, so I went back and checked) though after I installed the update I STILL couldn't find it at first and I think it's because RHP's directions are missing a step.

When you open the AppleWorks preferences window, click on Preferences->General. Then, use the drop down button menu which will say "Topic" (and probably show "Text" as the topic) - click on the button (Text) and you will be presented with another series of options. Click on "General" and voila. You'll have a screen wtih three options in the box, one of which is Options - Font Menu in Actual Fonts. Check the box. Then click on the "make default" button at the bottom of the box and you're set.

I think that the confusing thing is that it's under the "General" section - I fully expected it to be under the "Text" section, so didn't even click on the "General" option the first time 'round with 6.2.4 - but it's there too!

Glad I saw this thread...it was one of those nagging little "didn't AW used to do....??" thoughts that drifted through now and again, but because I tend to use Word much more often, I'd never bothered to investigate further. However, the kids use AW more, so it's good to know!

Paddy: I did your AW Prefs > General method before I started this thread and it didn't work. Anyway, after reading your reply, I thought I'd probably goofed and tried it again. Still no joy. When the 'Text' option window opens it's a complete blank and clicking on 'Text' does no more than show the other Topics avaiable. No options to choose from.

Like you, I get auto software updates regularly — did the last yesterday — but there was no mention of an update for AW 2.4.

Anyway, noting what you did, I've now manually downloaded 6.2.7 but on trying to install, discover that it's only for the US version of AW and, not unnaturally, I have the UK version. Tomorrow I'll have a shot at downloading the US version of AW2.4.6 and updating it. Can't do it today 'cos I've got a hot date tonight — bridge! Thats all we old folk can manage

I'll revert tomorrow with the latest news. Meanwhile, I guess I'll have to learn to spell US style

Bellbram, when you click on the topics, is there no "general" that you can choose? Maybe you should post some screen shots if not, so we can see what it looks like. I can't imagine that the UK version would lack basic functionality like that - and it is in the 6.2.4 version here - the 6.2.7 update didn't add it. In the Text window for instance, you should be able to choose your date format, default font, default font size and various things like font smoothing etc. Are those there? I'm beginning to wonder if your copy of AW is missing something!

After all the to-and froing in this thread I've finally discovered the answer which I give here in case it's of interest to anyone.

Paddy was right when he said RHPConsult's solution was missing a step.

Got the following solution from the Apple (UK) helpline:

In AW menu go to AppleWorks>Preferences>General (In this window change the 'Topic' from "Text " to "General"). There in the "Options" section tick the box against :"Font menu in actual fonts".

It's the bit in italics above that was mssing from RHP's reply.

Taken a long time to get there 'cos I've had a problem with the main drive and had to re-install OS10.

Anyway thanks again to everybody who tried to help.
