Group email acting wonko.
« on: August 22, 2016, 11:58:49 PM »
I often set up Group emails for different Board of Directors that I am involved with. Using Apple Mail. OSX 10.3.
One Group always leaves out one name when sending even though the name/address is listed in the Group.  I've rebuilt the Group (8 names) and it does the same. I have to send the relevant email to that person separately.
Suggestions?

First, how do you know the email is not going to that person/address? Have they told you that? Does that address show when you view the message in your "Sent" mailbox?

I know these sound like silly questions but I'm really not saying you don't know what's happening. wink.gif It's simply that a few weeks ago my wife asked me a similar question about a group she wanted to email. She said, "Look! I have these x number of people in this group but these don't show up in the 'To:' field!" I must say, I did not realize what the real problem was for some time. Like you, I double-checked that the people were listed in the Group. I opened new email windows and saw the same thing happen to me!

I finally realized that the cause of "problem" was staring at me on the right-hand edge of that "To:" field. wallbash.gif It was a scroll bar! Mail was "trying" to tell me (and my wife) that there was not enough space in the "To:" (or the "CC:" or "BCC:") field to show all the addresses I had entered. At least if they had been entered 'automatically'. I think if they are entered manually, you would probably notice the first line of addresses sliding up, under the top of the field. Perhaps the devs never thought about what happens when using Groups?

Anyway, that 'fixed' my wife's 'missing addressees' problem, I hope that's all you are seeing and it will fix yours! laugh.gif It probably doesn't help that Apple decided to make these scroll bar areas so narrow! wallbash.gif

I have 8 names in this GROUP X. When I enter the Group name in the TO field, only 7 show up. It matters not how big I open the window or how wide I stretch the TO field, that missing name is not there. I have to enter it manually and separately. Of course, sometimes I forget and that person misses the email. Then they are not happy!  wallbash.gif

I have deleted the GROUP X and rebuilt it, and the same problem arises.
Any other suggestions?

Not that you'd like. It could involve replacing the plist of Contacts or its database.

Option 1:
Iin Mail, open the Previous Recipients window. Find and delete any reference to that eighth person. If you find the "Group" in there, delete that also. This should prevent Mail from automatically using the data from there. Quit Mail. Open/Start Mail. Now try creating a new message to that group. Any change?

Option 2:
Instead of re-creating the Group, how about deleting that eighth contact (assuming you have that address info in another area, like an email). Then, in Mail, find a message from that person and use the Message->Add Sender to Contacts. Then, go back to Contacts and place that person into the Group. Shake well and try another 'Group Message'.

Option 3:
Do you have the Debug menu enable for Contacts? If you do, it has a direct connection to your Contacts and you could Restore from a version where these contacts worked correctly.

Option 4 involves finding/renaming certain plists. Shutting down and restarting the computer and Mail and/or Contacts.

Thanks for the suggestions, Xairbusdriver.

Finally got this to work! Had to delete the group and delete the one person's name and rebuild.
All good now!

Thanks!
