Safari always enters the wrong password
« on: October 06, 2016, 07:15:15 PM »
When I try to log into my brokerage account and allow Safari 10 to autofill the password, it consistently enters the wrong password. Safari > Preferences > Passwords has the correct one but I always have to type it in manually rather than use autofill.

I have deleted that site and password info from the preference pane and re-entered it manually (Safari asks if I want to always allow, and I agree) but the next time that I try to log in, the same thing happens. I have also cleared Safari caches, to no effect. This does not happen with any other website. This behavior is not new with Safari 10; it happened in Safari 9 as well.

How can I make Safari autofill the correct password?

Using the same OS version on my office MacPro and I'm seeing under SAFARI preferences tabs for Autofill and Passwords tabs; does changing info in there not fix the problem?
I don't save passwords and don't use SAFARI so there is nothing for me to change in there!  I also don't see provisions for rebuilding the keychain that I saw in previous versions
of OS 10.

That doesn't solve the problem. I have tried it a few times and it's no go.

Didn't we once fix keychain problems by deleting a PLIST file?  Anyway a year or so ago the Apple Forums were full of this kind of problem and there are six pages here about it; don't
know if the answer is there but worth a look:

https://discussions.apple.com/message/29093830#29093830

One of them I thought sounded like a good workaround:

I seem to have stumbled upon a fix for this. First you need to go into system preferences, internet accounts,
add another icloud account, delete your icloud account, add it again, then delete the alternate. It seems to
have fixed the problem for me. Keychains and Icloud.

I tried playing around with Keychain Access by manually updating the password but that didn't work. I don't use iCloud so that's not an option.

I've never used the Password function of Safari (nor any other browser) so I can't do much testing of the AutoFill prefs capability or reliability. However, I find it usually best to restart an app after making adjustments to its prefs. Sometimes, especially with OS 'owned' apps, a complete cold start.

I suppose you checked/cleared things in the Prefs->AutoFill->Other forms as well as the User names and passwords?

It might help to at least note the 'last modified' date/time on the appropriate Safari plist and see if it is actually making any real changes. Or maybe the username/Library/Safari/AutoFillCorrections.db? Lastly, it might help to Clear History, also. A previously used page may be keeping the AutoFill info even if you've cleared/emptied the browser's cache(s). Utilities like Cocktail or TinkerTool may do a better job at cache cleaning/clearing, also.

I did see a reference to a Disable AutoFill Blacklist Generation in the Debug->Miscellaneous Flags menu. Doesn't seem to 'read' like what you are experiencing, however.

Other Forms is disabled and I cleared the brokerage password in Passwords. As you suggested, I cleared History of that site and that made no difference. Interestingly, everything works fine in Firefox (I have the appropriate extension there), although I rarely use FF. I think that that site just doesn't play well with Safari.

Another 2 cents worth:  I don't use autofill.  One of my banks will not allow access if I "paste in the password" using
Safari. Currently 10 but the same thing with the prior version.  The password has to be typed in by hand. Not the case with FF. Beats me how the bank knows the difference.
